My son and I are going to be doing a Bobber / Lynx / lion hunt in BC next year 2012 . Driving from Maine to BC . I guess we are NOT like most of you RICH hound hunters as I just took a part time job to cover the the costs Among the pack he has 2 Blue dogs and an English that he uses on Bobbers . He really wants to use them on the Bobber /Lynxx deal but not too sure on the lion .Neither he nor I have any Lion experience .What are your thoughts on that ? The biggest issue that I see would be mixing our hounds with the outfitters hounds . May or May NOT be a problem . Just making the point that we have had a few problems in the past when our hounds have hunted with other hounds that they did not know.

All hounds are current on their shots and meds .Really need to find out what the Canadian Requirements are for bring hounds into Canada .Can anyone point us in the right direction as far as contact info goes ,so crossing the border would NOT be a problem.

Welcome to Canada. All you need to cross customs, is a rabies certificate within 36 mths from a vet for each dog over 6 mths of age.
You will have a long drive ahead of you and a good gas bill .

Never took dogs into Canada but brought one out of Canada. I crossed in from Idaho and went to Cranbrook. The border agents asked why I was going into Canada. I told them I was picking up a hound I bought for bear hunting. They then became really concerned and asked if I had any guns or ammo in my car. I told them I didnt. They were realy friendly and wished me a good time. My problems came on the return trip. The U.S. Customs didn't believe that I had drove all the way to Canada to buy a dog. Searched my car, checked Id's, Etc. Didn't find anything and sent me on my way. I much preferred the Canadian method of interviewing me. Now with the Homeland Security issues may be worse, don't know.

john and Bearhunter Thanks Doing the drive deal because I plan on making 2 stops along the way to visit relatives . That and the fact that I was in a plane crash once has turned me off from flying .really don't have to take the job ,but will feel better when the time comes that Cash will be on hand . No telling what the fuel costs will be a year from now . We are at $ 3.11 for cheap gas now Will have the firearms paperwork in order and Passports are in hand . Just not sure what the hound deal is or if we should just shelve the plans . Last time we hunted BC we crossed into BC from the Idaho border Pre Homeland security days . We gave them respect ,gave them all our paperwork and license/ insurence in and out fairly quick . Not sure if that would have been the case at a larger border crossing or not . Really love that Cranbrook area.

scroll towards the bottom. Took some to Canada this summer with no probs. Rifles can be taken in for 50 bucks each, no pistols, pistol ammo, booze and over 10 cans of snooze!

Which outfitter you heading up to hunt with. You think he would have the info for you.

Are you hunting in the Cranbrook area again? I live in Cranbrook and could find out some info for you if you need. Just let me know what you need to know for sure. I have a friend that works at the Kingsgate boarder crossing.

Hi Bob, as John said all that should be required is a proof of rabies vaxine for dogs over 3 months old(I believe).When you return to the US the Vet papers should prouve that you are not returning with dogs you bought in Canada. Oh yeah enjoy that cheap gas at 3$ a gallon up here its over 5$. Enjoy the hunt!

I traveled through about 1 1/2 yrs ago with 3 dogs and 2 horses. I had health certificates and proof of vaccines for all and had no problems. You can travel with a handgun but it requires a little more paperwork that must be accomplished before you show up at the border. all firearms must be checked at the border but don't walk into customs with a firearm. As far as ammo they didn't have a problem and I probably had about 25lbs of variours caliber rounds.

Make sure you register the guns you are taking with U.S.customs before you go and keep a copy with you at all times so that you will not have any trouble bringing them back in.

You can't bring handguns into canada unless you are going to a sanctioned shoot. No chance if you are going hunting, and don't get caught carrying on in the bush, it is a no no.

Who are you hunting with ?
I'd ask if you can be put on a bit of a flexible on call status so you can make sure conditions are good before you come, thats a long haul to show up for poor conditions.
It can be VERY hit and miss.

If you are carrying a restricted firearm like I did(480 super redhawk) then you need to get it preapproved before you show up at the border.

It looks like a lot of work but it was fairly painless. Just be sure to have your stuff together before you show up at the border. Once I got back to the USA on the Ak side all they cared about was the paperwork for my horses.

I entered in through Alberta but traveled through BC and Yukon into AK. It really wasn't that had but as I said have your stuff together before you show up.
