would like to know what you guys think, i want to buy a running walker from a guy in the mid west where they run to catch, this hound is 4 years old and never been shot over, we shoot some of our yotes, whats the chances of this hound being gun shy? its probably been a few generations that havent been shot over, thank you for your input in advance !!

Simple grab a gun and shoot when you go to pick up the dog. Then you'll see how he acts. Gun shy dogs are pretty obvious.

This is the quickest way to make him gun-shy if he isn't already . Doing this will certainly make him that way. Gunshy is not inherited only man made. If you shoot around the dog just make sure the owner or handler or someone known by the dog is doing the shooting. Dogs aren't stupid they know.
If you (a stranger ) were to shoot around my birddogs at the kennel they would hit the dog house and they are definitely not gun-shy. Maybe try banging some pans together at feeding time would be better to monitor man shyness but just pulling the trigger by a stranger over the dog , is disaster in the making. Don't ruin the guys dog.

same here. i can shoot by my hounds and they go nuts over it. i went out coon hunting with a friend my hounds had never meet, and i let him shoot the first one out. when he pulled the trigger the hounds ran for the hills.
just my 2 cents. good luck with that hound!

Well, the guy is trying to sell the dog to a hunter. He had it four years and never shot over it or trained it that way. Only other thing would be to not buy it or don't worry about it or have the guy work with it around guns first.

i simply look at it this way. i prefer being able to not worry bout it. if a dog you are trying to buy is supposed to be seasoned or been under kills then it shouldn't be a problem when shooting around it. it better loose its mind and go off, if it runs for the hills you need to hand the owner the gun. a young unexposed dog is a diff story. of coarse mine never get exposed to anything smaller than a high powered rifle. it is still each to their own. some ppl shoot small rifles around them first and progress into larger calibers. i feel there is to many dogs out there of great caliber to sit and all but beg one to do or act like you want. i can feed a good one as well as i can feed a bad one.

Most of the gun shy dogs ive been around, would show signs if they even saw a gun. You didnt even have to pull the trigger! I agree its a 100 percent a man made problem. They say you can sometimes correct it, but probably not worth the hassel.
