Anyone know in crossing curs with hounds if the dam is a hound and sire is cur will the litter tend to have more of the typical hound hunting traits ( colder nose, open on track) or if dam is a cur and the sire is a hound will the litter tend to have more of the typical cur hunting traits (hotter nose, silent on track)???

I guess basically what Im asking is the traits that are passed on more dominant out of the dam or more dominant out of the sire? and are the hound traits more dominant or the cur traits more dominant? sorry if its confusing, thanks for the replys!

+There is no way to know. In the breeding process the genes pretty much match up at random. Some pups may show more cur traits and others show more hound traits.

I agree with briarpatch, makes no difference whether sire or dam is hound, some of the pups will show more hound traits, some will show more cur traits, and the ones that show the best traits of both hounds and curs will be good dogs.

could fall either way.. and you could get the worst of both sides in the results.
most usually in making crosses like that, ----the results that turn out good ---->in all probability will not produce in their own likeness,
a lot will depend on the type of cur you start with too!

I made a cross a year and half ago. Male was 1/2 walker 1/2 trigg. Female was pure bred Leopard cur. Half the litter came out looking like walker hounds. The other half came out looking like Leopards. Only kept track of three. The one I kept takes after the cur. Super gritty but warm nosed. Runs head up. The other two had more hound traits, run a colder track, more open mouth, but drift the track.

I got a dog from a guy in red bluff (chuck ferrell i think) that is suposed to be 1/2 plott 1/2 leopard and she is a high tan color. I was wondering if you knew anything more about her or her parents maybe. Just a shot in the dark.

look up a punnet square, this will show the statistical breakdown of one gene, then add more genes and it gets exponentially more complicated. Here is a link to some basic genetics information.

Outlaw. I dont know if its related or not. Could be. I gave the rest of the pups away on Craigslist so dont know who all ended up with them. Some were hightan. No plott in them though. All three run with their heads up and are fast dogs. All three were a light on the tree at first then something snapped and they all tree good. All are super gritty with no back down in them.

Bob Fogel has had great success in crossing curs with hounds they all go back to his Dottie dog that is Loose Bruce bred. I have two of them from diffrent litters both will cold trail,strike from the rig , fight game, run with their head up as soon as they can, and have great speed and both strated catching their own game before a year old. I have hunt with Bob and most all his dogs and what I have is common in all his dogs. As far as looks they look for the most part like birddogs with one or two that look like a hound now and again.

Some of the best critter catchin dogs I have ever seen was breeding a fast head high up and at em type cur dogs to a good hound. I dont think it matters which way you cross it at all and if it does its too little to notice.
