wanting to buy some walker pups. i have heard that the lipper bred stuff is the best?
Does any one know of any one around me that would be able to "steer me in the right direction?
Also my buddies keep telling me to just wait that some will come up for free. Is this true?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lipper produced several nice litters but very much like Stylish Harry he bred everything with 4 legs so you really need to do your homework especially on the female side of things. You are not gonna find any direct litters out of lipper more likely they will be 3 generations back.
As for finding free pups I guess you can follow the local paper and get your hands on a backyard breeding pup, tough way to start out. If you want to have any success you need to sit back and read most of this forum. You will find a good breeder eventually.

The guy that just answered your post "Spanky" is about as knowledgable and good as you will find. He has some proven walker dogs that alot of big game hunters are using. His other buddy has had alot of experience with Lipper dogs and could give you alot of advice on those dogs as well.
It seems your free pups will mostly come from accidental crosses which could be anything crossed onto anything. Like Spanky said probably not the best way to start. If you get something from a proven cross or proven blood lines and pay a little most likely you will be ahead to start with. I'd bother Spanky if I were you

Go to a club meeting. Cascade tree hound assoc. or olympic tree hound assoc. There are guys with very good dogs in both of those clubs. More than likely you won't pay much if anything at all for a good pup. What ever you do, avoid the internet. If someone has to sell dogs out of area then they probably aren't good dogs. Cascade used to meet the last wednesday of the month in spanaway. I don't know about now. Gary from west coast telemetry used to be a member he may be able to help with club dates.

Well naturally I have to disagree with that statement. There are many reputable breeders that have websites and sell pups occasionally on the internet. Yes there are those that try to make a living off of it and may not be as reputable.
Not all the time will breeders sell hounds in their own back yard and create competition for themselves, some do. Mike Kemp is one of the best breeders here in the Pacific Northwest that produces quality litters time and time again and they are proven and sells his hounds through internet website and magazines.
Dogman you can follow what ever direction you want but I would not by a pup from anyone until you have either hunted with the parents or at least other pups out of the parents.
Remember one thing also, you are as responsible for the pups progress as the breeder. You owe it to the pup to give it the attention it needs to grow and develope. No Breeder is producing the self taught almight hound

While you're right, Scott. Some don't want local competition. 90% are selling culls. Trust me. Majority of dog dealings on the internet result in someone being pissed. There are several good houndsmen in washington who are not on the internet and have no desire to be. Alot of dogs not from the coast have a hard time adjusting to the environment there. Experienced houndsmen have been taken on the internet. It would be VERY easy for someone just getting started to get taken. Also like I said. There are people who will give good pups and dogs away there. I grew up there and started hunting there. I wouldn't ever buy a dog on the internet if I could find a good one in washington or oregon. I don't think people are as inheritly dishonest as they are in other places. Not saying no one is but there is alot less of it.

Hey dog man where do you live?My current stud dog is out of a very heavy Lipper bred female. As for the free pups my feelings are usually ya get what you pay for.Get ahold of me if I can be of any help.I can give ya references all over the US on all types of game.Like Spanky said most of the Lipper blood is getting back aways however within the last few years his semen has been being used.Although I haven't heard of much of it going the biggame direction.$1000 a straw most big game guys are to tight wad LOL

Good info and some discouraging info.
Really sucks now a days you cant take a guys word on things.
I'm in a similar boat, looking for an established blood line, started hounds and not going to just take some guys word on it.
I'll pay for something if its worth it.
In this day and age its easy to get screwed on the smallest things but guys who rip guys off shouldnt expect anything less than drastic measures and a stranger standing at their door.
Unrightfully taking a mans money is equivalent to breaking into their home.
Hope it doesnt happen to anyone on here.
I really like this site so far.
