activists are tied up with the wolf issues right now, half the lion hunters probably think it would be great to kill away, vast majority of public opinion says that the deer are all being eaten by lions, stockgrowers have alot of pull and want all lions dead, fwp irrationally raised the quotas to kill more, do they make that much money on lion hunting???? who's to stop it from passing? FWP is the only shot it has of being shot down really. A public vote would probably fast track it right through.

Larry I hate to see that this goes through, but things like this happen, just look at whos running this country. This would be a bad deal.

Most ranchers want the lions dead but I dont know verry many who have ever lost any livestock.Coyotes and bears also take a big toll on fawns and elk calves.Personally Ithink the wolves are the biggest probablem with deer and elk numbers. Before we had lots of wolves we had lots of lions lots of deer and elk. When the wolves increased the elk and deer numbers went way down atleast around here.iDont understand houndsman that want to kill every lion they catch I dont know are they so rich they can afford to drive around forever looking for track

Well CAT HNTR you know know a Ranchers who has lost 30 Calves in the last 2 years from lions . I see lion tracks all over on my ranch in the winter, and my neighbors have see one so full that he way sunning out amonst my cow heard. Thats bullsh*t for our commisioners of the State of South Dakota to be protecting a PREDITOR SUCH AS THE MT LION, what about the Ranchers who put food on the table for the Nation.
If they dont open a hound season are they going to start sending me a check every year for my losses. If so send a $30,000 dollar check right awy to me, because that is what I have lost in 2 years because of Mt Lions.
Also our neighbor has lostprobably double what I lost. He is having a hell of a time with them also.
We have rights to. Boot huntrs are not doing any just on a massicur of killing onley females. All we have seen around here are mature Toms and young Toms.
There is No Maintaning the population they are straight screwing te eco sytem of lions up by killing o many females and leaving all these Toms .
But that is my 2 cents.
I am going to start voicing my opinions at every commisioner meeting along with I am going to start taking pictures of damages and losses.

Okay, here are some questions for you. Were any of the calves that were lost confirmed lion kills, by the SDGFP? If so lions are classified as a trophy game animal ranchers will get compensation for the damage. I perssonaly think hounds should be used in the SD lion hunting season. I have always believed that. I think that it will happen sometime in the near future. It definitely is a much better lion management and conservation method.
As far as MT proposing that lions be classified as predators, well that would mean the MTGFP wouldn't have to pay compensation for damage loss to ranchers. Only big and trophy game animal damage is compensated. So basically if they are predators then whatever loss a rancher has will be out of his own pocket. On the conservation and management end of it, lions will then be hunted like coyotes and there will be no mamagement plan in place to ensure a healthy population.
I wish you guys in SD and MT the best with that

I could be wrong but in oregon isn't a lion considered a predator. No hunting them with hounds and real cheap tags? Can anyone clarify this.

No, lions are big game mammals in Oregon. However when they do damage, big game regs do not apply.Ol Curt 541 570 2863

what i dont get is how everyone always blames the lion for killing everything. like people say lions kill half my cows every winter. im not sure what its like in other places but where im from i rarely hear about cattle loss to lions. every once in awhile when ranchers are calving a lion happens by once in a great while. the problem i see is coyotes 9 times out of 10. the kill the crap out of fawns and kill alot of calves. way more than any lion. maybe im the only one that sees it that way. ive been wrong once maybe twice haha. anyways im just tired of the lion taking the blame for everything. it might be diff elsewhere idk.

My grandfather, father, and I have been running cattle here in idaho for generations and have never had a lion kill a single cow or calf.A good sized lion population lives here. We calve and run our cattle right next to the mountains with zero roads or development in between with no problems. Many times we've found fresh deer kills right next to our calving pens. I've never heard of a lion bothering any other cattlemen we know either. The ONLY way i can imagine cats killing that many calves would be 1. if there was an injured or sick cat that couldn't hunt normaly, or 2. if there were absolutely no natural game in the area.
