How y'all doing. I'm a big time dog hunter who loves to hear them run. I'm a big time deer hunter. Between me and my father we've got 7 walker hounds which in his older age now I care for. Which I've been doing since I was about 8 years old. Man I'm glad I've got 2 younger sons of my own. But, on to the serious business and enough about myself. I have a astro 220 and 6 dc 30 collars. I joined this forum because I google about the trackers burning up with the use of a FM radio around them. This weekend my club votes whether we go to FM's from CB's. I have found a few other sites like this , that are having the same problems. I've also heard a Lil rumor going around down here about it. Ok, so don't do it I think. Then I hear someone say look in the back of your garmin manual and it tells you don't use your FM on the channels in the back of the manual and you'll be fine(Pg 55, 151.82 151.88 151.94 154.57 154.60Mhz). But the problem it doesn't state that. Matter of fact it does'nt say anything but, "Murs(Multi-use radio service) frequency.". I'm a new user to this unit and I need a Lil help. Like I said we vote this weekend and I would like to help the guys in my club get on the same page. If its alright or if it's not. Thank y'all very much.

Redfish,

If the members of your Club who are using the FM (Icon or Marine Band) radios are not Licensed….the FCC and the Florida Fish and Game will take care of the problem with the Garmin’s burning up….they will show up in your club during the season and start writing major tickets ($10,000.00 and a years felony probation for the 1st violation) for Hunters using the Marine Radios.

Most of the Paper Companies have moved to help enforce this after an incident out of Steinhatchee involving the Sandhills Club.
The FCC and F&G showed up and wrote warnings in 2010….however they told the Club that no more warnings will be written….getting kicked out of the Club for using an un licensed radio is bad enough….the fine and other penalties just are not worth the hassle. Burning up a Garmin is a small matter compared to the other consequences.

North Carolina had the same issues with the Coast Guard and the FCC a couple of years ago….some hard headed good old boys ended up doing jail time and paid big fines over the Icon and Marine Band radios.

My advice is to see what the Land owner who you lease from has to say…..then the issue may be easy to agree on!

CJC

PS a high out put booster for a CB is just as quick to fry the Astro 220 as the Marine Radio!

Really would not matter what the land owner had to say. The law is the law. A landowner cannot say it's ok to break the law on their land.

There has been so much posted on this, it really would be a waste of time to post it all again. Just need to do a search on garmin on a few sites like this. I will say a few things. If your group is looking at using the free FM service Murs. Might as well not bother o even buy a garmin. You will burn them up as fast as you can key a mic. If your group is looking at buying a license in the business band. That would be fine if you can get a channel above the marine band(157). If you get one below that it may be risky depending on where you get it. You need to stay as far from 151-154 as you can. You will have little problem using the 2m ham band 144-148 with a license of course. As well as above the marine band. So long as you are not using certian antenna and following some basic common sense rules. I have yet to burn one up using the marine band or higher. Of course I only hunt 150+ days a year, and sell these darn things. So my experience is quite limited

Doing a search on my posts will cut done on some of the extra stuff, and get you to some of the threads on this. Still have problems figuring it out. Feel free to give me a call.
