I am a 5th genoration Florida native and I was blessed to grow up and hunt in the woods of the ranches my dad managed when I was growin up. I have hunted hogs all my life with I stran of dogs my dad started when he was a kid, he took up alot of time and culled alot to get the kind of dogs he wanted and I was lucky enough to already have em when I was growin up. While I still luv to run hogs with my cur dogs I've allways wanted to try coon huntin every since I saw "Where The Red Fern Grows" when I was a kid. I've been tryin to find some ole' timers around here that might still run coons or anybody for that matter that might could help me out and point me in the right direction but I guess there aint none left. It's sad to see the way things are changein, It seems like new golf coarses and yankee condos pop up every day on land that my family use to hunt on. All that to say this...Does anybody know of anybody down here in Florida that coon hunts??

I was born and raised in west central Florida Dustin and ran hogs, coons and deer with various breeds of dogs growing up. But because of the influx of yankees I decided to get out and come West. Im now living in Utah and wanting to start running hounds here. I honestly dont know any olod timers still around who hunt coons. I was fortunate enough to be taught by some of the best of them in the 80's and 90's when I was there. Its sad whats happened to Florida. It used to be a fine place to hound hunt 20 years ago. Good luck to you.

Yeah it is very sad. They are ruining the land and running good people out like yurself. Luckily I have some friends and family that work or own some large enough tracks of land where I can still run my hog dogs. If it were not for them I could'nt hunt and I would be neiboring you somewhere in Utah already. It would'nt be bad if most of the yankees did'nt act like we owe them somethin but I swear everyone I have ever met will let the "yankee" fall out of them sooner or later. Anyway I guess I'm gonna just have to order me some hound pups and start em' my self but I was just wanderin if there might be anybody down here that did coon hunt but I guess not. I just hope the land I hunt on is big enough for em' and I don't lose em'. How is Utah? lot of room?

I hear ya...The Rebels move up here, buy an acre of land and think they own 50. Gets hard to turn a dog loose where I always have before.

I'm not sure it matters where you are from really. Somebody who lives elsewhere with a bunch of money is gonna move in and start shit with the locals.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't a north/south deal. It's simply a city vs rural folk thing. It doesn't matter where you live, it's the same issues. People flock out of the urban jungle to the country and then try to change the country to be more like the city. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Best advice, figure out a job that you can do in rural US as far away from a metro as possible with a bunch of state/fed land, and run the heck out of the dogs on whatever you can. Just don't expect to have many 100s lining your pockets.

This is just what I did. I left the rural life to seek more money. I ended up in Indianapolis In and started a dang sucessfull lawn/landscape deal. I had to drive at least an hour in all directions to hunt anything. I finally got fed up and moved back to Illinois and have a 5 min drive to hunt what ever I want. I have quite a few places private and quite a few places public. The kicker is finding a half decent job around here SUCKS! Just about every factory here lays off for winter... the worst time to do it LOL! with no gas in the truck it makes hunting tough!

I am learning more and more every year to live as much off the land as I can... it helps alot trust me!

You meen to tell me that southerners are moving up as far as New York and Maine? That's somethin else. Can't figure why they would want to leave somewhere as beautiful as the south and go all the way up there. Are they rude and do they drive real slow and cut you off when there in there cars? Naw but I do thank God for the places that I do have to hunt. I also thank the good Lord that I don't have to personaly deal with the yankees anywhere but on the road, so I guess it could be worse.

Even though you called me a tree huggin fag LOL!!!

We have a major lake here and every summer and fall we have the damn city folks flocking here to enjoy the lake. What kills me is when squirell seasons starts most of the lake jerks haven't left yet. I hunt on the lake and it gets damn annoying running into "hikers" who think I am more or less a terrorist for carrying a gun in the woods they are "hiking" in

this happens everywhere it seems. with the baby boomer generation being the largest generation with such a close gap in age. it is making for a boom in folks retiring to the country or buying seasonal homes. everyone is right though they sure don't fit in anywhere! the really hard ones to get along with are those who where born in rural areas but grew up and lived in the bambi culture of some city. they have such fond memories of "country life" they move back and expect it to be a disney movie.
I don't know that there is a solution to them other then letting nature run it's course and old age get them out of everyone's face. the one thing they have in common no matter where they are from is their learned ignorance and belief that their opinion is fact, regardless of subject. The real bad thing is all their damn free time. this really gives them the chance to get out and start changing laws and generally screw up where ever they decide to bless with their presence.
ever notice how they hate property taxes and don't want any of "their" money wasted on education or similar uses like city parks and rec. areas? "They already paid for their children s needs."
I don't mean to be disrespectful towards my elders in general and some of that group managed to use those years to good advantage how ever many did not.
living in AZ. we get those folks in the winter by the thousands the last thing you want during hunting season is bird watchers and hikers etc. lecturing on the evils of your sport.
the scary thing is America is turning into a urban society and I haven't seen a urban society anywhere that I thought very much of. I could rattle on about this subject and the negative impact it is having on the country in many more ways then just hunting. the housing market and finance are all being affected by this too. the local pay grade for working class folks isn't improved but they have to compete with urban retirement wages for property and in many areas that is a loosing battle.
