I was just wondering where everyone thought the best spot on a pickup for a dog to rig from would be. Do you like them on the hood, or on top of a box with their head over the cab?

If they are PLOTTS under the truck

I like mine on the hood. But the box works too. I put my older dogs on the hood because they are used to it, my "in training" dogs on the box, and the rest rig with there heads out of the box. I like to be able to see what the dogs are doing better, they tend to be more "careful" about babbling, or trashing when they are front and center. You also learn a lot of body language, and we find a lot more tracks, ect, that the dogs smell, but might not strike, from watching them. We can usually tell what it is without seeing a track by HOW the dogs strike and behave (what order, who barks first) as well. But we've had the same two dogs up there for the past 4 years, they are a pretty good team.

i let all my dogs rig right out of the box. you can still watch them from the mirror and see what their doing. i show all my dogs every thing so i know if i need to take care of it.

we rig them from the box. but i think it would be cool torig them from the hood. also

I rig mine from the coffee shop in Roosevelt, UT.

I put mine in the cab with me and open the vents, that way I can have the radio on and windows up ,later, Ike. ps I will be limited to three and four day old tracks this way though.

An old timer once told me the best spot was he back corner on the passenger side of the truck. He explained it for 2 reasons. First the passenger side is closer to the edge of the road where the scent is going to be held better by vegetation. Second The scent that is laying low on the ground is kicked up by the tires allowing for the dog to have a better crack at it.

I don't exactly know how true it is. But, since being told this I have noticed the first dogs to open most of the time are on the passenger side. No exact numbers, maybe a 60/40 deal.

Something to consider though.

The desert, no doubt cause it doesn't seem anybody in that country has a rig dog. Maybe a guy could build a platform to put on his muleburt and then he'd be good to go, it would be to find a short mule but even a Missouri mule would work.

Houndenem, have you considered adding some sort of humidifying system to your vehicle's heating system? This may add some moisture to those old dry scent molecules and allow your dogs to strike tracks older than a measly three or four days.

? i dont know if im reading this wrong or what? guess it makes since if you have all 2 lane roads but around here its just single lane mountain roads one side usually a drop off other side straight up hill. sorry not meaning to bash your post or anything just took a minute for me to figure out lol
