I am kinda new to hound hunting and have read that bloodhounds are very cold nosed. Maybe a stupid ? but if they are so good with their nose, why dont more guys have them in their box. My boy was looking at a bloodhound pup and just curious how it would do on cats and bears? Thanks for any info.

Most are very slow and dont tree as good as other hound breeds. You will find them crossed with other breeds to build up the speed and treeing. I would think if you were only coon hunting they would do great but for bear and cat the other dogs would smoke them on a track. Im sure there are a few out there that will tree better then others and a few that can take a track like it was shot out of a gun, but for the most part thats why.

My opinion anyways, is that you can have a dog with too cold of a nose. If you have a dog that is trying to work out tracks from 2 days ago, then it may never catch up to the quarry, and if it does it is going to take all day to do it in most cases. Don't get me wrong, that's fine if game is extremely scarce in your country; however, if you're turning out on tracks that cold, chances are someone else will have 2 bears treed by the time you have 1, just because their dogs aren't wasting as much time trying to catch up to the animal. Though, I don't have any first hand experience with bloodhounds, I imagine they would have a hard time keeping up with some of the other breeds. (walker, red, blue, etc.) They just seem too big and slow to catch up to a bear or lion, and really keep the pressure on them once they get them jumped. If you like the bloodhounds, look into the "majestic" hounds. They are a bloodhound cross. Hope this helps.
