hey guys i'm looking to put a tie out out for my hound and i'm looking for ideas that he wont be able to pull out of the ground as he gets bigger. he's 8m now any ideas thanks

use a trolley system if you have to tie him. it gives them much more exercise and is impossible to pull up if done decently

i got one of them now and they seem to get tangeled alot around the post. must be a hound thing my mut dont get tangled.lol

Can you weld? If so get some rebar, some pipe the will fit over the rebar but will still spin around it free and a heavy chain link and weld up your own. You can cut the rebar long and he will not be able to pull it out or you could even cement it in. I dont tie my dogs out kennel only but I have lots I made for when we hunt. I can try to take a few photos or even draw something to show you if you need.
If I was going to use it all the time I would grind the rebar smooth where the pipe will spin find some pipe that will just fit and still spin. Then drill out the center of the rebar and drill 2 or 3 holes in from the sides under where the pipe will be then you can tap the top hole to take a zerk fitting. Then you will be able to grease it, I know sounds like a lot of work but with a little grease in there it will last a very very long time.

put stops on the trolley so it lets them get to the post but not wrapped around it. a cable clamp at the right distance from both ends works fine. a kennel works good too.

If your ground isn't to rocky try a "earth anchor".

I've seen one similar but a little easier to make. Set a piece of 2 3/8" drill stem or something a little smaller in the ground. Set it about 3' deep with about 3' sticking out above the ground. That will give you 6' overall.

Next take a piece of sucker rod about 8' long and weld a chainlink on one end. Then heat the rod at the 2' mark and bend it 90 degrees. Drop the long end in the pipe and attach your dog chain.

The dog will have a hard time trying to pull 6' of rod out of the pipe. I've never seen a hound get loose from this set up and it has no resistance so he can move freely. With about 15' of chain, the hound will have plenty of room.

Here is what I use. I take 1/2 inch rebar, about 18" long. I then use two 1/2 inch washers and one 5/8 inch washer. I weld a chain link to the 5/8 washer. I then weld one of the 1/2 inch washers about 2 inches down the bar. Then I slip the 5/8" washer over that. Then I weld the other 1/2 inch washer over the top of that, so that there is about 1/8" of play. I then attach a piece of chain to that. I pound the stake down so that the bottom washer is flush with the ground. I use 3' chains for tying out at field trials, and will use a longer chain for when I am camped hunting deer or elk. The 3' chain is just a bit too short for extended days in the hills.

I just drive an axle rod through a harness ring into the ground. Leave about 6 inches above ground. Have a swivel at both end's of the chain.

put the leather collar on tight and check it the next day and periodically. It'll stretch initally when you first put the hound on the chain. Also double collar your hound so he can't pull the chained collar over his head and slip out. Good luck, Paul Conway
