I would like to have all bear hunters who use this sight from all over the united states go to the CALIFORNIA part of this web sight and check out the topic "HELP THE CALIFORNIA DFG HELP YOU AND DEFEAT HSUS" I am just curious as to having more people look at this post and respond with their opinion.

Thank you,

i know it is hard to cram all the info on this site to make heads or tails out of the drawbacks if any to the bowhunters or other hunters that might disagree to having it changed cause im for all hunters getting along . there wasnt enough info for me personally cause i dont understand your laws or even what they are. id rather fully understand something before making an intelligent decision. this is just my opinion from what i read.certainly harvesting more bears that are overpopulated makes great sense.if your not getting much of a response it may be because lots of us dont understand california laws.as far as the antis go there hitting us hard this spring also, and were fighting just as hard to keep our heritage.good luck from your hounding brother in the northeast.

The short and sweet for Ca. bear season is:
The hound season opens the same day as the General Deer season middle to late Sept, while general deer season is still open we can only run one dog per hunter,(deer season depending on you zone can run up to 6 weeks), No GPS, No treeing switchs, no training season and you cannot train your hounds on bear unless the season is open and you have a tag, most of the areas that have runable bears are in the dogs closure zones and they shut thoughs areas down for any lose dog from the 1st of April to the openning of general deer season, F&G sells a unlimited amount of tags, but will close the season when they reach a take of 1700 bears (this includes road kills, deperdation, bow and general bear season) if the quota has not been reached then bear season will close the last Sunday in Dec.,but you can still be in the woods to run Bobcats, Fox, & coons until the dog closure's the 1st of April, F&G est. that we have about 44,000 bears in Ca. I think is been 3 of the last 4 years we have reached the quota about 3 week before the scheduled closure and F&G shut us down, currently F&G wants to raise or do away with quota. I think that I have this right or dam close.

Dale,

I am just curious as to where you get the facts that the number includes road kills and depredation. I have reviewed almost everything that i have found and i believe that i never have seen where it states that road kills are added into the quota. I do remember something about depredation but i am not sure if it was added into the quota also. I am not trying to be a dick, just trying to be more informed on what the actual facts are.

The annual Bear report published by F&G. They post it in the Libary.

Hi Dale,

Please post the URL to the document you are referring to. I have never heard of this theory before, nothing in the language defining the quota supports the inclusion of road kill and depredation, and I highly doubt that this theory is accurate.

I had not heard of that till I read this so I called fish and game and asked them about it. I was told that the road kills, deperdation kills were NOT counted in the 1700, it is added to the total for the yr after the season is over. Then they use this number when they are seeing how the total bear numbers for the state are looking.

About 10 or 12 years ago I was reading though the Annual Bear report and it wasn't clear on this then, when I spoke to F&G to find out how they worked there numbers I was told then that they were included in our bear quotas, the F&G then told me that if I had called the 1-800 number before any of the seasons open they would have a to date bear take listed, I don't know if this has changed since then or if the F&G person I spoke to was incorrect. I called the number today and they said the up to Dec.22 the take was 1278 and when you go to there web page they have it at 1503 as of the 26th of Dec.
