We all know that dogs can distingquish different animals. I would like to hear your thoughs on this issue of bear scent.

I have hunted bear for many years with my dogs and have never had my main three dogs break track on a bear once they started it, and split up onto another bear track. They seamed to know which bear they were chasing. I have had young dogs pull off the track and start running another bear that crossed my orginal race. So, my question is this; How many of you beleive that the dogs know what a bear smells like, but can also tell the difference between two or more other bears? Does each bear have its own individual scent?

I'm pretty sure that animals have thier own scent because the dogs seem to be able to stay on the one that they started on. Doesn't matter if thier bear dogs or beagles.

i keep looking at this topic and yes i agree they each have a individual smell. the variation cant be much but enough to distinguish the individual bears. i also want to add that i believe that a dog remembers the specific bear if it happens to get away. we have one bear that is extremely intellegent in our area and even proven to be very aware of where we are. i won't go into a big spill but my sadie dog(along with others) has run his guts out twice last season and it seemed like the second time she was on him and struck that it was a lil more personal due to she is usually fairly sensable bout not being a handful to turn loose and that time she was plain out all to pieces, we seen him twice but it was just across the wrong side of the road to do the deed and he would just walk right by us without a care in the world.

i aint no bear guy but if a blood hound can smell the difference in people and have it hold up in court then i would assume bears smell different. unless they are identical twins.lol.

Well blondes, brunetes, red heads, all smell different so I'm guessing the same theory has to go for bears as well..... I've heard from the professionals that they can tell what color phase the bear is by how hard there dogs rig...... :beer :beer :beer :beer
