Hear is an interesting paper on dogs ability to smell and how they communicate with their noses. The dog has over 200 million receptors in its nose or approximately 900 square inches of scent receptors. What they say is, that the longer the dogs nose, the better he can smell. Would this dispell the theory that all dogs can smell the same?

All dogs do smell the same, with there nose. The bigger the dog or his nose is the more smell he should be able to smell, also I read one of these studies or statements that the animals that are black have more receptors that light colored animals. Dogs have far more ability to smell then they ever use. The drug and search dog trainers have shown us this. So whats the difference in hounds? We don,t use many blood hounds any more. Maybe it is the breeding and the train ability of the dogs. The breeding and our ability to communicate with the dog to get out of them what we want is what makes the difference. That would mean that a dog that is breed to do what you want it to do and with a trainer that can get the best out of a dog would be a great combination. I have seen people take half ass dogs and make them look good and I have seen people take take great dogs and make them bad. Dewey

There is so much more to catching game than cold nose. Most of the super cold nose dogs can not catch much. There is desire, intelligence, treeing or baying, train ability and HEART Oh and the person hunting them. If we get hung up on any one thing we will be missing out on something else. Dewey
