Opening day

Well our opening day was ok. I was abot 10 minutes away from our bait areas when Jerry said that he had a hot hit and dogs were away and jumped. Another guy and I flew over there and sure enough the race was on. We threw more dogs in as more guys got there and kept getting fresh legs on him. Well three hours later we had to cut the race of because of lack of dogs to put on him anymore. No one ever seen the bear so that kind of stunk but oh well. They had it caught a few times in the middle fo a huge swamp where we couldn't get to him and they walked it for awhile. It was opening day and we need to get the dogs back in running shape. We had all the first day mess ups. Back trackers, and young dogs scattered everywhere. But, oh well it was good to get the dogs out and back on the bears.

same probs here. dogs out of shape and all nuted up made for tough opener. hit one at 6:00 picked last dog at 11:00 never climbed but most every body got a look as he crossed roads. about 80lbs if he was wet

but i dont think it was the track at the bait? that was 3 1/2 inch should have been a little bigger bear. they must have picked him up along the way good luck rest of summer

Well we headed out tonight with basically no start dogs, because they were wore out. Anyways I figured our chances of getting anything going were not all that great. We had alot of baits hit and none of them looked real good. Lots of trash and several hours old, and again with no start dogs i didn't think we could make anything happen. Well we found what we thought was our best bait and dumped out. They went in and barked and started lining it out. We dumped the rest in adn somehow the race was on. they only traveled some two miles before treeing in a big pine. One dog came back to the bait and a young one stayed a ways out from the tree otherwise the rest made it. Was the first tree of the year without any start dogs to get one rolling. We felt pretty proud of the hounds last night!

we hunt near shell lake. and have all black dogs. weds. morning i got off work at 3:00am ,went home got the dogs and went to the wood. just to find out everybody else ran the night before

when they went to bait for the morning. so they all slept in. i decided to dump all 4 on a hot bait. 1 that knows whats up, 1 that half knows,1 that never ran bear before (strt coon), and 1 9month old pup. lets just say some things went better than i thought but most didnt. i ended up catching last two at 2pm. with the help of the rest of the crew. 28hrs without sleep is not a good thing

good luck steve

Justin,
They are going better than I have ever thought they would be going. First day we walked one all day and walked in and pulled the dogs off at 4pm and they were bayed up tight. Next 5 days, 5 bear climbed and then yesterday I finally got outran by one. Dogs are really firing on all cylinders right now.
