I would like to know everyones opinion on which dog they "Think" is best for dry ground. No need to get all crazy with each other, just trying to research some lines. Would like to know what line and how they run!!?? All opinions very welcome!!

I think mine are pretty fancy. All I've done is pirate a bunch of others' lines.

Several years back, it was either Steve Smith or Larry Hendrix, no matter as they were both there, asked Dale Lee where would he go to get a dog if he were completely out of dogs? Without hesitation, Dale responded that he would go to Terrell Shelley. About 8 years ago, I heard the question asked about dogs, and the response given at that time was that Larry Hendrix probably had the best dogs at the time, but that Terrell probably had the best line of dogs. It would be hard to count out Sam Dieringer. This past April, Steve Smith told a couple of us that were lucky enough to be in his presence that BOTH Sam and Terrell were running dogs that were still considered Lee Brothers dogs.

I don't know the lineage of Charlie Leeder's dogs, but they have certainly been around long enough to go back to the Lees.

There are some government guys in California that are getting it done nicely with Nance Walkers. They are also mixing in some Boone Shockey black and tans to come up with a smallish high tan strain of dogs that gets it done nicely.

This should be a good starting point.

This is a hard topic in Arizona. What I have found is that most AZ houndsmen have great dry ground dogs. But that does not mean they have the best known lines. So lots of guys get bent out of shape if they see that there name is not listed. Or they realy get bent when they find out that someone got a dog on the market that is made and they start catching lions with that dog. Even when I am sure they have paid for and sold dogs on the market.

I would have to put at the top of my opinion list would be Scott and Sam Dieringer and now Sam's boys for sure. I would put Brent Bunger on that list. I know guys that have dogs from both lines and they are some great top notch dogs. They are not easy dogs to come by either. And they may share some of the same blood when it comes down to it.

there are some others but a lot of them have the same strains but if you could get one from these guys better crosses you would most likely be pretty well fixed up.

How often does warner glenn have pups? If he still does and what do they cost?

I'm not to much in the market to buy any, just looking for lines and who uses what. I have some from a fellar in south AZ that has run alot of dry ground. Then the line i used to have 15 years ago may have a survivor i will breed to to get it back (Cross my fingers). I know Chris Todd definitley has the rep for dry ground as well as Warren Glenn. Hopefully in the next 5 years you can add my name to that list. Just hopin my lines cross good enough for dry ground!!!

I had a Van johnson dog and he was top notch.

Warner Glenn usually has others raise pups for him out of bitches he has given them and his best stud dogs. He really doesn't sell dogs he is a full time lion hunter and keeps 25-30 broke lion dogs at the ranch at all times.

Thats right Mike. People just flat wouldn't believe the handle he has on every one of those dogs. He exercises all of them at once without a tracking or training collar on one of them. He does neck the pups together to keep them out of trouble.

He's also one he'll of a guy!

i think anyones dogs would be that good if you had that kinda time to work with em, most fellars only get the weekends or their days off to run or work your dogs. Of course if everone had that time there wouldn't be great houndhunters like Warren to wanna be like!!!

Will take alot longer than 5 years for you to get a line of dogs like these guys have. If your only hunting weekends, you will probably never have it. IMO dont try to reinvent the wheel, get dogs out of these lines and go hunt.

azdogman, i dont think he's tryin re-invent the wheel as you say.
maybe just improve on what he's already got? seein what others in teh area have and what works? i'm almost positive theres no french-fried hounds in his pack LOL

I dont think that if you don't have dogs out of those specific lines you won't catch anything. I am sure there are lots of good dogs out there without one of them names out there that catch just as much as with a name. For two, you can't even try to assume what i have or what i am trying to do, or what lines I already have. I don't just hunt on the weekends, i hunt more then most ever will. But opinions are opinions, and you are always welcome to hunt with me, I mean seems like you know it all there AZDOGMAN so maybe i can learn something off ya.

There is one thing i know for sure from experience, you can take anydog...... I mean anydog.... and teach him to hunt. Now how good or great a hunter it may turn out is another thing, but every hound will hunt, sometimes its the hound owner thats the idot and doesn't see how the dog is hunting. Just my Opinion though!!! You hunt a mutt dog from any breed everyday...... you'll have a huntin dog, I'd even put money on it. Lines just make it easier!!

As for reinventing the wheel, not really, just trying to get my line going. Was just wandering what everyones opinions were on what lines!!
