Here is a link to the numbers that Jason is talking about.
http://wildlife.utah.gov/public_meetings/info/2011-07-08_packet.pdf

These numbers are way out of line. In addition to contacting Jason every single one of you need to contact every member your regions rack and express your feelings about these numbers. The female sub-quota has the ability to be a great thing for Utah lions but these tag numbers will destroy us. If you haven't ever contacted the rac members its an easy thing. I have taken the time to get the list into a format that you can all use, look at your region and copy and paste or go to
http://wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/rac-members.html

Please if you own a dog email these guys, flood their email with respectful but clear statements of your displeasure with what is being proposed.

If you cant figure out what to write an email or don't know how call me and I'll do the damn thing for you 801-360-4106

Just asking, are we ok with the current plan that is supposed to be for ten years? I Know this is a loaded question but i am trying to prepare my email to all the RAC members.

Everyone needs to do what walker83 has proposed and send respectful emails to the RAC members. That is just the start.

If everyone sits around this time and does nothing then hound hunting cats will be over. Lets get motivated here and do something we need some stick together on this issue.

UNITED WE STAND

Thanks

I am in the middle of drafting a letter to my RAC members. Main questions are:

1. Last year was the first year to have the lion proclimation basically effective for three years to "allow the management stratagies time to be effective". Here we are in the second year of the initial three year cycle and we are making amendments to the management plan AND proclamation. ---What happened to the three year stratagy?

2. The average number of female lions killed over the past three years statewide is 116. The proposed female quota for the state is 153. In order for the female subquota to even kick in we would have to achieve a 26% increase from the number of female lions harvested in the last three years. Female subquotas could be used as an effective tool to achieve one of the goals stated in the Management Plan to "Manage to protect Adult Females" but certainly not when the female subquota is such that it INCREASES the number of females taken.

3. Why is the division not looking at areas that are chronically below big game population objectives (and thus throw that unit into predator management) and setting realistic big game herd objectives for these units?

4. The formula for determining if a unit has an increase or decrease in the number of lion tags issued is based largely on the number of Adult female lions killed in the previous 3 years. Why are not ALL females counted in this formulation particularly given the fact that the mean age of harvested lions over the past three years is a mere 2.9 yrs.?

When we first herd that the dwr was going to have a female quota we were excited, now look how bad they have screwed this up. It's simple the dwr wants every lion dead to justify thier inability to manage the deer herd. Everyone please do something about this, we have to fight this. Make your voice heard. If your a guide this will kill your living. You will do good this year and then after that you will loose you buisness cause thier will be no more lions. So everyone will loose.

i read all the complaints about the lion hunting in utah. im not trying to ruffle any feathers but the quota really shouldnt matter if the houndsmen that hunt there protect the lions themselves. its like say the quota was 50 females. that doesnt mean you have to shoot 50 of them. even if it was a thousand, just dont shoot them. i know thats easier said than done. and again im not trying to piss anyone off. i dont live there so im sure i dont know the specifics. i know you guys once had alot of lion but now you dont. its getting to be like that pretty much everywhere. i just think its up to us and not the fish and game. hunting with dogs is something WE do and love, not them. im not sure exactly what can be done but not shooting females is a good place to start.

basko,
That seems to be the very problem with the some of the houndsmen here in Utah. Letting the females go is a big problem for some.

I would like to say I am in favor of this plan. I have been asking for a female quota for yrs the problem is they have the numbers to high again. I think we need to work together to get the numbers lowered it might make a difference.
I was looking at the numbers and if the four biggest units had female quotas of 20% that would drop Manti down to 26, Monroe to 19, Uinta to 13, Pine Valley to 10, making the female quota for the whole state 109. I think this is more of a number we could live with.
