Been trying some different baits this year . Usual Spots Usual Sweetnings Pastry ,Molasses Ham Bones etc For the past year we have been Cleaning up Dry dog food and saving it . Got a couple of guys working Supermarkets as shelf stockers . They have been saving any Spilled or torn bags of dry dog food . After a year we ended up with almost a 50 gallon drum of Spilled Dog food . We have been covering some bait piles with it .Surprisingly the active piles are showing signs of being hit and most morning most of the Dog food is gone . Not sure if they think it is an appetiser or candy  anybody try this before :?: I would further guess that most came from 6 or 7 varieties . Also on top of the Pastries we have been putting a few scoops of corn silage which they seem to like also . Neither seems to be Scaring them away .

Off the wall question, how does that title have anything to do with your post? Thought i was going to read a story about a bear whipping some dogs or something.

AZDOGMAN : The title was somewhat in jest , My point being the bears seem to enjoy the dog food as much as the hounds do . A common thing up here is guys taking the hounds to the bait pile and and let them blow off .

what got me started to try this dogfood idea was an experience I had last year ,I was driving out my driveway early in the morning when a houndsman drove past and blew out a tire .so I pulled up behind him and asked if he needed help .I had a great jack in my tool box . We started talking hounds while changing his tire and he asked me if I wanted to go out chasing bears with him that day .A few miles from where we normally hunt . So I said yes . The first bait pile we checked his hounds " PLOTTS " had started eating what dog food he had left on the bait pile . I thought that was quite amusing  He pulled them off and it was quite apparent that the bait pile had been hit .He was walking his hounds around within 10 ft of of the pile when they blew off .We let them go .the chase was short maybe 150 yards and they had one treed maybe 130-140 lber. We let him stay treed he took some pictures and gathered up the hounds and returned to the truck,

I still contend that the hounds were more interested in Chowing down before chasing the bear  again less than 10 ft why did they NOT blow off coming to the bait pile :?:

Moved a few miles to his second bait his hounds did the same thing though he swore the bears had eaten most all of his dog food bait . We could see one of his hounds working the area ,when she blew off his other hounds did the same . Let them go and this chase was even shorter less than 100 yds this bear treed , He decided to take it with his bow turned out to be a nice one Boar dressed out at 305 lbs .

He was from the Bangor area I gave him my contact info but never saw him again after that . To this day I can't say if his hounds were worth feeding or not apparently he was happy with them . I will let you guys decide on the hounds noses

Hunted bears off bait in Idaho last year. Dog food, bacon grease, and a couple bags of popcorn, and every bear in the area will hit it. First bait site we set up, all we had was some bacon grease. puored the grease across a dead log and set up a trail cam. a little under three hours later got our first pics. started adding dog food and popcorn to the pile and within no time had multiple bears showing up.

I've never used dog food. It's to stinkin expensive to feed to a bunch of bears. Heck I even try to cut back and feed my dogs something else. :D

I did see it done up in AK though. They stuffed that and some grease in a 55 with little holes and the bear seemed to eat it fine. It must have worked because my cousin shot one off that type of bait. I think if a guy was baiting a large number of baits or didn't have to hump in the bait a ways, there would be better options. Bears eat jut about anything until they get picky when the mast crops get thick.

Lets see ? he went to 2 baits and treed 2 bear in under 150 yards and your not sure if he has dogs worth feeding because they took a second to strike? I guess most of us hunters need to get dogs from you. because in my book thats 2 for 2 witch if my math is wright thats 100% hmm not sure what else to say?

Jamie: Go back and read my post . I am basicly asking WHY the hounds decided to EAT first before they blew off at the bear :?:

Because some dogs don't have as much hunt in them as others.
Some live to hunt, others like to hunt.
