Mr. Joe Rufus Lyne and Pool Butler have passed on.

Cliffton Lyles is still at Freer, Tx. Henry Wiatrek is still at Poth, Tx. I don't think Goofy McCumber hunts anymore. I don't know a Dan McBride. You might be thinking about Roy McBride from Alpine, Tx.?

I have heard Henry Wiatrek talk about Joe Ray and John Lott, I never knew them, don't know if they are still around are not. Robbie

Mexico Joe,
Although I couldn't make a pimple on Mr. Joe Rufus Lyne's ass he is my wife's grandfather. Sad to say I was to late to meet him, He was one of the best of all times. I only dream of being as good a cat hunter as he was. There are some great ones still hunting this country including Robbie Hurt, Clinton Brown, Steven Ball and some I'm sure I don't know of.

I sure wish it were safer down in Mexico as I'd love to go help with some lion problems. That is my true passion that I developed as a western cattle rancher. Love the ranching life and the problems that come with it!

I knew Joe pretty good but lost track, if he was your wifes grandfather I am trying to figure out who was her dad?? Pochie, Phil or ??? Last time Joe went to Mexico on a lion call he caught 35 bobcats in 2 weeks, was there, he had Rounder, Queeny, Henry and a load more of running walkers, it was on Mateo Flores ranch and it had been in a drought for 2 years, bare ground and had rained 12 inches right before we got there, 4x4 all the way around his ranch and a couple of more adjoining ranches than came to the camp to get him to look at lion tracks, we were catching so many cats we quit taking them to the camp dump due to all of the buzards hanging around, lots of times we found 2 cats in one short tiny trees, we ran out of dog food and had to come home when the water went down on this crummy rock stream we had to cross to get out, those were glory days, ihave found out Mr Lott from Golaid has passed as well, i met Finny Clay there a couple of times and i see his son is on this site, I never heard of any of those other guys ecept the Hurt name sounds familar kinda not sure, the McBrides were or still are a father and son animal damage cat hunting team thats been everywhere, Joe Rufus sent some dogs down to Beleize on a jaguar killing registered heifers and got the pictures back down in Tamps Mexico when we caught all of thsoe bobcats, we never cut the lions fresh track as he had just left i guess whenwe started making squares on that huge ranch trying to cut his track, it was getting to hot down there on Hiway 2 when we were there, had armed machine gun escort in and out, prety scary for sure and that was prob 20 years ago now, I got a ton of pics from that hunt if i can find them, looks like its too dangerous to go to mexico still to hunt, I lived in Alpine for a while too and used to cross but drugs got that too hot as well, never did like it out there anyway, too much wind and 120 degree days but lots of lions, I posted in the lion secton to see if anybody here was in that area still hunting but no response so far, McBrides makes the leg hold trap business out there still but dotn know how much hunting for lions in Brewester county anymore, thanks for the info, do you know who got Joes cat pack when he died??? Always wondered where Quennie ended up and that one female jump dog, she was really something, she knocked me into a stream climbing up a tree limb to get to a bobcat, man those were days, pool was pretty cool to hunt with as well, oh well i kinda wished i had not come here, its all bad news looks like, thats what happens when you get old, u wish for the good old days when u could get a phone call to go to Mexico on a lion call out and be hunting in 5 hours,,,I figure Joe prob caught 0 to 5 lions and 150 to 200 bobcats every year for 60 years, prob the greatest cat hunter ever in south texas and a fine fine guy, he was about completely deaf last time i hunted with him and i had to tell him which dog started, which jumped which was in what postion and what dog was treeing or baying the cat in cactus, omg, we both had ticks crawling on us the whole time, soaked my boots in diesel and wiped the dogs down with it as well when we went to camp and still tickey!!!!

Mexico Joe,
You sure did know Joe! He was a hell of a cat hunter for sure. Im not sure who got the dogs after he passed. My father in law is Phil and I'm married to his oldest daughter Amanda. We're all in Cotulla and Poochie lives in George West still.

PM me with your name if you would. I'd like to tell Phil that your on here and it's obvious you sure hunted a lot with Mr. Joe Rufus. I was only a few years to late to meet him. He sure burned out a lot of potential cat hunters. I don't think many people know just how hard he hunted. His better half (Marry?) also passed earlier this year at 90 something. I think they were just a little tougher in those days. Great talking.

Dony waste your time about me, thats sad about Mary passing, she was as good as Joe, shame that they are both gone, sure not forgoton, wonder what ever happened to Dustin, he used to come down here and hunt but not seen him or Tom Jennings in ages to keep up, am in nursing home and was just thinking back about the good ol days up and down US 59 and FM 624 and Mexico hiway 2 and all of the hunters after bobcat and lions, shame we did not have digital cameras back then, nobody could beleive the things the old timers did and saw, i found a picture of a onza Joe caught in Live Oak county I guess that be 40 years ago today, take care and let it rain on the gravel down at Cotulalol

Mexico Joe,
I agree, please share all the stories you can stand to share. I haven't heard too many stories of Joe Rufus from Phil, as you know he was burned out on the cat hunting early on. Jimmy Henry hunted a bit with Joe and enjoys telling some stories. He remembers the day Joe caught the Onza. I'm trying to find out the name of that great gyp jump dog as we speak. I know He had a dog named Rowdy that was his favorite ever. He often said, "you can take ol'Rowdy downtown Houston and road him about an hour, if he can't find a cat to run he'll just manufacture one". Jimmy knows the name of the gyp your talking of and it's to late to call him. I'll find out first thing in the morning.

I'm sure you haven't forgot how hard Joe hunted either. Phil and Jimmy always tell me that if Joe offerered to make a circle (hunt) you better not plan on being back for a few days or even a week. He'd stay out till he ran out of food (human or dog). If the cats weren't moving he'd simply kill the truck and take a brief nap. One time Jimmy, thinking he was doing Joe a favor, loaded the dogs in the box while Joe was sleeping. When he woke he went to looking for the dogs (which usually either were sleeping under the truck or had a cat treed). Jimmy said, "Joe I loaded them in the box". Joe's response was, "now damnit Jimmy, how are they going to tree a cat in the damn dog box"?

Hope you can share more stories with us. Memo, your welcome to hunt with Me anytime. Must warn you though I'm just a rookie.

Great posts! Love to hear those old stories, reminds me of the days sitting in August Timmerman's camp at the South Texas Wolf Hunters Meet. We ran lions, treed jaguars and a few off colored stories for a young fellow without leaving the shade of his smelly tarp. I always knew when Mr. Timmerman was "stretching the truth" a little as he would tilt his head back and close his eyes...
Great to hear from some of our senior members. Growing up, my buddies never understood why I would not hunt with them rather all of the "Old Timers". It was really very simple, you could not learn a thing from the old guys but not a thing from the youngsters.
Adios,
Gary
