Over the years I have always started with the amount recommended on the food bag which is "ball park". I adjust the amount, gaged by their stool and body weight. I like them to have a firm stool and athletic look, whether they are being hunted or not.
I currently have three hounds, pinned seperately and they each have different requirements. Two are 40 lbs. hounds (1 male & 1 female) The male requires 3 cups per day and the female 2. I have a smaller female just under 35 lbs that is on full feed, for she regulates herself better than I have been able to do.
When I raise pups I feed them twice a day (morning & night) basically all they will eat at a setting. I have a hog hunting friend who raises a lot of pups and he suppliments powered calves milk with the dry mix until 8 weeks old. I don't like the pen mess, so I will change feeds (if necessary) to obtain a good healthy pup.
Just an adder on pups: I have had excellent results with supplimenting the bred female"s diet with liver and cottage cheese 30 days prior to delivery. It increases her
milk production and potency. The pups are then easy to regulate on to feed.
