I am looking for ideas to modify my dog box trailer I pull behind the snowmobile. I currently have the box on an angle iron frame that is mounted to a pair of old snowmobile skis. The skis still have the leaf springs which help a lot for the dogs, but they don't seem to be big enough to support the box in very deep snow. Anything over say 12" deep and the box seems to drag in the snow. How big of skis do you guys have on your dog sleds?

Here's a couple of pictures of my dog box setup. Was wondering if anyone else had problems with floatation on deep snow, and how big of skis to use. Thanks

I am going to build a couple this year also, I was thinking of using a inexpensive snow board and cutting it in half to use for both ski`s. Putting both curls towards the front. Not sure on suspension though or if I really need it anyway?

Put plastic ski skins on the bottoms of your skis. It will increase surface area and make them slide easier. Available from dennis kirk for most skis. Also, sheet the bottom of the "A" of your hitch with aluminum. That helps with flotation in deep snow. My skis are 8-10" below the bottom of the box for more clearance. looks like yours are only 3-4". Also, I can't tell in your pic, but if you have a rigid hitch instead of one the hinges at the box, the nose of the trailer will not dip into the deep stuff. JMO. I use them a lot.

I built a set of skis that have 1/2"x 8"x 60" heavy UHMW plastic on the bottom.
They are kind of heavy but float real well and slide super easy. They do the trick for me.

Walmart plastic snowboards.They are light and inexpensive.We move bobhouses,or should i say bob mansions on and off the lake with them.

There are two things that might help you; 1. lift the box up higher so that it wont drag in the deep snow, and 2. lighten the load with a plastic shipping crate.
