Was wondering if any body uses plotts as bobcat dogs. I'm not trying to start anything but looked back on a coupple pages and couldent find any about plotts. Every body talks about running walkers and other treeing walkers and blueticks. I love my plotts... (sometimes) ... I know people will say that they are mainley warmer nosed or not smart enough for a cat or bla. bla. bla. I just want to now who can catch a bober on a regular bases with plotts. What they are grade or registerd if so what lines? Thanks Casey....

Depends a lot on what bloodline of plotts.I had plotts for about 10years back in the 80s I had 1 that could catch a few cat but was not a cat dog.They were Oregon Plotts Bred buy Ron Hill great brear dogs not cat dogs.I saw a plott that treed a lot of cat buy its self that Simpsons had.I dont know what blood line.Jerrry Hollifield treed a lot of cat about this same time frame with plotts.They were Bearpath plotts that came from Idaho.Just like any breed of hound you can find good ones and bad ones.All people that breed dogs like certain traits That they breed for so you will see branches from lots of different breeds that will do good in certain areas.Finding what you like for what where and how you like to hunt is what matters. Paul Laney in Maine and Rick lane and his dad in Maine all run plotts with success . Duane smith from vt I believe had a line that were good on cats. Thats all I know I am No plott guy! Lol

Owned a plott female that was an outstanding cat dog nothing to look at and not real fast but as honest as you could get and made very few mistakes. There are bobcat dogs out there of all breeds and color just few and far between. I would hunt a pink poodle if it caught bobcats consistantly. Andy

Ya... I just wanted to now of other guys useing them. All I see on the bobcat side is those running walkers and treeing walkers not thats bad or anything I have a coupple walkers to... just courios about the plotts. How many guys out there have good plott bob dogs.

I got a plott that Im hoping makes a great bobcat dog. Last year he was 8 months old and ran a frozen over bobcat track like he was running a bear and left my lead dog in the dust and after about 4 miles or so treed it. He was just on a bare ground bobber the other day and over ran it but it was only his second bobcat. He's got a real cold nose from what Ive seen, we will see how he does on cats this year. He is White Deer Kennel bred, Ive heard over good things about the White Deer Kennel plotts and I know of a guy around here, Rezdog on here, that had a damn good cat dog that was a plott.

I use plotts on bobcats and I seem to do OK........

One of the best known bobcat dogs in Minnesota, moved to Mich, was a Plott. He has thrown some bobcat dogs with lots of different females of different breeds. I can not remember the names on his ped, but he was registered. He looked like the very old pictures of plotts when they were curs before all the hound blood was introduced. I do not know if he was a throwback to that, or if he came from breeders that are striving for that. I have heard there are some that do. He came from breeders in Maine. I never hunted with him, but I heard some amazing stories about him.

i have nothing directly against plott hounds i've seen some excelent ones but not often. from what i've heard from alot of people is they don't tree very good they're just good at baying and are franitically open on a track (which i like bout em). but i've only heard them being good on boar and bear most of the time but i've rarely seen plotts that are good at treeing. but theirs good and bad in every breed. if their was a perfect breed of hound everyone would have it. they all have variation to fit in with your style of hunting.

I have seen some very good plotts on cat and lion. Cap Atwood had some in the 60' and early 70' when I worked for him that were good. I have had a couple that did well on cats. The breeding is important as said. Stay away from the ones breed for bear and grit. I have a White Deer pup that I am starting this winter, she will make a good dog just don't know about keeping up with the part running dogs. Caps plotts moved a track like a cat dog should, cold nose, fast and not sticky. Any breed can produce cat dogs some just produce them more consistently. Most of us have a different opinion as to what a cat dog is. To me it is far more than a dog that can catch a cat.Dewey

The litter was large, at least 7 pups maybe 9? Three of them were Melissa, Clara, Sawyer. Clara is a Gr Ch. and Melissa probably will be. The Dam, Baby Doll is dead. Melissa and Clara are small, deep chested, tight built, extremely quick, athletic and agile. ( Just the way I like 'em )

The top side are the dogs you might find in Maine?

I am not a Plott expert at all, but I know that some breeders have tried to keep them as they were very early on, which was the Plott Cur. I never got to hunt with Jet, but I saw him and I saw some of his pups on coyote. This is a high compliment from my perspective, so dont take it otherwise: Jet looked more cur-like than a lot of good curs I have owned. To me he represents more the way the old time Plotts looked. I have talked to people that have hunted bobcat with him and he is legendary and unexplainable.

David; I do not know much about Jets pedigree but Jim told me one time that he was star mountain breeding. I have 2 grandpups of his here now that I use on coyote, they are 3/4 running walker. I like one of them a lot better then the other he is more independent and says a lot more track, I am going to give that one a try on cat this season.

I see there is a grampa of Jet with the Star Mountain name. I wish that meant something to me. I might have missed the boat on the plotts. I sure have heard of some good ones. I know of more than one Plott breeding bear hunter that has a great bobcat dog among his Plotts. When I talk to them I get the impression that they set one dog apart to specialize on bobcat and they are outstanding. I also got the impression that they felt those special bobcat dogs only come along every so often.

I started moving toward the Plotts and some guys were trying to do an intervention on me, ha ha. They said those Plotts suck you into a black hole. You disappear and are never seen again in normal society.

I dont know, that dont sound so bad I guess. Maybe someday.

Larry, I thought Jim had told me that his Jet dog went back to Star Mtn Jet. Back through that gator dog maybe?
