They may be at a loss for proper words to describe a beautiful woman,
but they can eloquently describe the voice of their hounds
in words that other hunters can understand and appreciate.
The music of a pack of hounds in full cry is a spine—tingling,
heart—warming experience that lives in the hearts and
minds of these men long after the hunt is over.

I never voyaged so far in all my life. You shall see men you never heard of
before, whose names you don’t know, going away down through the meadows
with long ducking guns, with water—tight boots, wading through the fowl
meadow grass, on bleak wintry, distant shores, with guns at half—cock;
and they shall see teal--- blue—winged, green—winged, sheldrakes,
whistlers, black ducks, ospreys, and many other wild and noble sights
before night, such as they who sit in parlors never dream of.

. . . what a good huntsman should be: he should be young, strong active, bold and enterprising; fond of diversions and indefatigable in the pursuit of it; he should be sensible and good-tempered; he also ought to be sober; he should be exact, civil and cleanly; he should be a good horseman and a good groom; his voice should be strong and clear; and he should have an eye so quick, as to perceive which of his hounds carries the scent when all are running; and he should have so excellent an ear, always to distinguish the foremost hounds when he does not see them; he should be quit, patient and without conceit.

It is the strict circumscription of hunting and fishing—those unwritten rules of ethics, etiquette and propriety—that define the challenge. . . Success when it comes must be difficult and uncertain . . .
Even in the best of times there is an element of difficulty, doubt, discomfort, disappointment, and even danger involved in such pursuits. And often, great distances must be covered during very early hours, even in the dark of night.

Are you sure this guy meant houndsmen.
Just kidding, I enjoy those old quotes. You can tell they come from guys who think before they speak.

A hunter should never let himself be deluded by pride or false sense of dominance. It is not through our power that we take life in nature; it is through the power of nature that life is given to us.

If there is a sacred moment in the ethical pursuit of game, it is the moment you release the arrow or touch off the fatal shot.

If sentimentalists were right, hunting would develop in man a cruelty of character. But I have found that it inculcates patience, demands discipline and iron nerve, and develops a serenity of spirit that makes for a long life and a long love of life.

"The fascination of hunting cougar with hounds lies in the discovery and unravelling of a complicated trail, watching an honest hound strike out on a track that has been found and read, and eventually bringing the animal to bay so that you can see it for yourself."
-Jerry A. Lewis
"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog...all other friends desert, he remains."
-George Graham Vest
"Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

No shakespeare? Clarion calls etc. I enjoy reading most of these men. There's one missing though I found a book written long ago about the breeding of game dogs suitable for the americas the authors of many of the sentiments expressed were very poorly educated but could clearly express their opinions and knowledge. They all had favorites for differing game and would travel great distances to buy or breed to such a dog. We don't often think of how scarce dogs were for the exploration of our country and how many died young a good working or hunting dog was highly prized. Then eventually the great packs and hound culture developed on the work of these men and their breeding of our hounds. I lost that book some how and have never found it again in any bookstore or online. Continue to share these great words for all of us.

Unfortunately I can't recall the title or author but read the book often enough to recognize it easily and read the first page of any prospect to check. If I could remember it would probably simplify my search. And I will check your suggestion and thank you very much
