So I guess i just can't get it when a person would want a hound that runs both yotes and coon. It is the whole reason that I'm looking into running hounds for yotes nothing is more irritating then walking a half mile in snow up to my ass to a den tree when i am wanting to run yotes. Not to mention how extremely annoying it is to be running yotes at night when i want to run coon.
Would someone shed some light on this for me I don't get it!!!!!!!

Where I live the answer to that question would be based on how much Jackie D. you have consumed. None for me, just saying.

For me, I hate the "off season" for dogs. I figure the more game they can run the less bored they get. It is annoying when you are trying to start a bear and they "trash" on a coyote or coon or whatever, but its a risk I'm willing to take.
Granted, I don't really run many coons (more due to time than anything), but all my dogs *attempt* to run bear, coyote, and bobcats.

I just had a top notch walker dog pass away last week that I ran on Bear and Coyotes. A dog like him was so much fun to run I wouldnt have had as many memories with him if I would have only hunted him on one or the other. He was smart though! He knew he wasnt suppose to run coyotes in the summer but he would once in a great while but of course coyote season the bear are sleeping. He pretty much knew bear in summer and coyotes on the snow. I think a lot of guys are missing some great times and opportunities by only running their dogs on one type of animal. But I understand your point and the headaches you can have.

With a decent bag of dog feed at $20+ a bag, some people might not be able to(or want to) feed different packs of dogs for each critter they hunt.

I agree 100% Dundeal.
More you hunt them, the more fun they and you have.
I agree too that dogs get in a "groove" and at least have a feel for what season it is. I figure if you keep dumping them on bear they get the idea to keep looking for bear and vice versa for coon, coyotes, etc. Granted, temptation is always there and dogs will ALWAYS switch at some point but the good dogs don't do it as often as one would think.
But again, there is something to be said about that "pure" bear dog that you can free cast on that oak ridge loaded with coyotes tracks for the 5+ inch track.
To each his own.

I don't bear hunt and I can definetly see how running them on bear and yotes wouldn't really be as big a problem but i know my brother ran yotes almost all day long a couple times this summer when he was at bear camp!
I am a competition coon hunter and those hounds get run on coon only cause well off game is bad. They only get laid up for a few months a year but my coyote dogs do get a much larger break. Yes i do feed a decent amount of dogs but i prefer a strait dog all day every day. I'm leaning toward cutting back on my coon hound stock a bit to make room for more coyote dogs because i can run more of them at one time to keep fresh dogs out on track. I have a walker female on here that some of you may be interested in for bear hunting or may know a friend that is willing to do some trading.

Ten four guys hate two c a hound sit on the chain. The more there in the woods the better they get. I run bear, coon, coyote, and bobcat. Coon can b the toughest because your free casting the dogs but usually after a couple good nites and enough coon they know what there supposed 2 chase for the most part. We run our bear off baits so that helps too, as far as not getting crossed up on a rig. You'll always get a wild goose chase now and then but with the garmins now its easier getting them back. Young dogs especially, from around 6 months to a year and a half the more their out the sooner you can decide if they have what it takes or not. Alot depends on where you live, the availability of game, and the length of time you can run certain game to. JMO
