A meat type bait works well but apples or any fruit will work too. I have 3 traps set around my cabins but am not doing as well as I thought I would only 3 so far. Am just using some old havaheart traps. First I used some fallen apples from our orchard caught two right off, then a couple of weeks with no hits. Apples might have dried up too much to give off much oder. Last night we had a rooster die so I used his head and legs as bait and caught one.

Ringtails will mark territory with scat and all three cabins had a big pile on thier porches so I set up the traps on the porches. Look around for those piles and set near there.

They are not realy put off by scent and in the past I have caught the same one several times in the same trap. I think the numbers are just down here due to most of the mtn burning... our land is about the only unburned area.

Back when leg holds where legal here I caught one 4 times in the same leg hold trap, first caught one front leg and then a back leg and another back leg. He was down to his last leg and didn't chew that one off...

Coon baits or mild musk bait even dangling tin foil if your not catching them you may be running low on them. They do hang out in large groups don't know if those are family groups that disperse with the young maturing or a permanent group. They also travel singly this is how I see them in the morning day. At night normally if I see one there's several. Btw how come your purposely trapping them? Just curious

They travel in pairs alot or if you see more than two together its likly a family with kits. If its a good area you can find alot of them in a small area sorta like a colony. Years ago I caught 9 in 11 days time, same leghold trap. The trap was set near our chicken house.

Look for piles of scat in rock piles and near hollow trees, also around buildings. They can get into very small holes for thier size, around 1 1/2 inchs. Basicly if thier head fits they are in. I know this because they love chickens, had one kill 27 chickens in a night once.

I am trapping them for someone that wants them for taxidermy. They are neat looking little guys, very striking with that tail and mask. Back when I was in highschool I trapped alot with leg holds(it was legal then) and they brought $8 each. Not much for the time it takes to mess with skinning ect. but for a highschool kid thats good money ;) I even sold spotted skunks they were $6-$10.
