David, I don't run bears but my Billy dog's sister went to WA and the guy uses her on damage bear hunts and says she's really good. A few of the Billy x Sage pups went to bear hunters and everything I've heard back is good. One went to TX and is used on hogs and the guy likes her and says she's plenty gritty. The best thing to do is ask the guys that are hunting them on bears.

David, I got a pup from the first cross {Billy x Sage} and I mostly hunt bear and that pup has been on about 60 trees this year. He is only 18 mths old or so. He is not suicidal gritty but he did get holes punched in him . I'm really pleased with him.

Nice looking Tom Kevin. It was great to meet you in the field today and run some country together. We will have to do it again in the near future.

Nice lion.
On the suject of redbones for bear. Ibought a redbone female out of Walt EARLS dogs from montana.
Hell of a lion dog and just as good of bear dog.
Bread her and all the pups were the same as her.
Her and one of her son were the only hounds that i have ever had that were killed by bears.
All excellent tree dogs.
Over the past 40+ years i have ran every breed of hound there is, curs included.
Found some equal but none better.
