I hope I am posting this in the right area. I'm new to hounds and I'm planning on getting a hound in the very near future for treeing bobcats. The hound I am getting comes from a very proven long line of coon dogs.

My question is will it be possible to train this hound for bobcats if the dog is raised and trained for bobcats? Or will its lineage of coon make it extremely difficult?

I have a very good friend that has raised, trained, and hunted coon hounds for around 20 years. I am not getting the pup from him, but from someone he recommends. However, I am going to be leaning on this friend hard for assistance and advise and he is willing to help me.

However, I would like the opinions of other experienced people here. Will it be possible to train this hound to tree bobcats with such a long lineage of treeing coons.

tree dogs is tree dogs . long as it's got the nose and legs it can git r done . we treed a many of b cats with the coon hounds it was an added bonus thru the season . they do need the speed imo thats where that gosset bred black n tan and the walkers came in . this was rough river bottom huntin .

Its possible. Me and most the guys i hunt with run both cats and coons. keeps the dogs busy in the summer. If it has that tracking instinct bred into, put it on what you want imo.

and as far as dogs go we ran swamp rabbits down at the river and treed several cats with the beagles as well . talk about some purty sounding races

some dogs have a strong preference for one kind of game or another, some don't. Depends on the individual. Bobcats are much harder to hunt than raccoons, so you may want to start your pup out on raccoons anyway [or feral cats]. Chances are a good tree dog will hunt whatever you let him know you want him to hunt.

When i hunt for bobcats i like a slower dog. It seems like all the dogs ive trained on coons at young age did very well at bear hunting. I had a black and tan female that was a super star coon dog sucked at bear hunting and rocked at chasing mountain lion and bobcat every dogs different. I will tell you now bobcat are not easy at all from my experience ive had 3 to 4 hour races and never treed and had hour races and treed it takes a lot of on the ground work to train your dogs to chase bobcats and to be succesfull at it. pointing tracks out when the go up a down fall teaching your dog to locate. I wish ya luck it a very fun sport but it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of turning your dogs out with no success but keep at it and dont get discoraged your going to be frustrated but learn when to call the shots. And always believe your dog till they prove you wrong. Best of luck
