just kinda curious as to the different ways people are teaching there dogs to do things.

My girlfriend has been watching my dogs as i am away at work, and she is playing with a pup of mine teaching him to trail using a coonhide and hot dogs. she has been laying a very simple drag down by the creek then putting the hide in the tree with a hot dog within reach of the pup (at first). then by mistake she put the hot dog to high for him to reach and man did he get mad and start treeing. Now after 2 weeks of doing this my 5 month old pup is staying treed for about an hour before he starts to loose interest.

if you guys could i would like to hear the different ways people are training

me personal i have always depended on finished dogs to train my pups i would really only teach disipline. thanks look forward to read your ways

I really like the old dog idea. But one thing I can't stand is thinking I'm gonna have to teach a hound. I think encouragement is all a guy should have to do as long as the breeding is right. I've done a lot of walking tracks out with my young dogs. And also been perty lazy and have done a lot of just dumping them in on top of the pack. It's always a pleasure to me when I don't have to hang back to pick the pup up anymore. It'll be interesting to learn others tips and tricks. And while we're on the training subject. One thing I have wondered for awhile is: do you guys think that pushing a pup at a young age will affect his mind set as he progresses? Another way to ask is do you think a pups bad habits as a youngster will slow or disperse a good finish? Just wondering. I like early starters! I'm impatient so I always feel like I'm Being hard on individuals as pups while they're playing around the cage and Others are getting with it. Another reason I wonder is because as a kid my sister and I were always expected to halter break and handle our colts. Some as new borns some at weaning age. But! My dad never wanted his potential saddle horses touched until he could get his hands on them when it was time to break them. His reasoning, and it wasn't always that way but he thought that as youngsters their brains are sensitive to bad habits and get harder to break when they are older if they were to get away with things as colts. Or something like that I wasn't really paying attention. Ha. What also makes me wonder is I was at an older hounders house and he's always got his young dogs tied up as me I like them running around. Same reasoning though, he didn't want his pups learning bad habits.

I got all caught up in that "training" stuff when I got my first hound. Fun to dink around with a pup doing the hot dog drags and stuff but, I wouldnt get to serious about that kind of stuff. I honestly believe to much of those unnatural treeing exersizes can cause problems down the road more than its gonna help anything. Biggest thing, for me anyway, is teaching or training a pup to handle young and get used to everything and make her confident in her self and surroundings and other dogs.

The hunting stuff should come natural. Here now, if you've got a dog you raised up, got it handling good, its confident and pretty well over the puppy games and ready to start, I think a person should give it the opportunity to do its thing naturally and learn in a natural environment and hunt setting. I think then after some time if you see a dog struggling in an area you can do some things to help her thru.

i agree with you blaze about to much false training can have negative results.I dont claim to be a dog trainer nor do i really have the patients. But periodically i try i am just used to teaching fundimentals like sit come stay load those kinda things and let the old dogs teach the young dog the ropes. Now that i am going to be home more i am going to try mike leonards methods on my pup like i did on my last one but i will dedicate more time to this one and we will see what kinda impact it has on him.

+1 BnB. Put a handle on them and teach them what you want them to chase and the rest should come naturally.

I dont mess with my dogs till there a year or so old. Catxh the desired game and walk ur young dog in and jump it out a time or 2 before shootn it out. Do that a time or two and then turn pup in on race. Dont worry abouteachn a dog to tree. If ur dog cant move a track the treeing part dont matter. Just my opinion..

i like to start them young playin tug a war with a coon hide, i have a stick that i has about 6 foot of rope that i tie the hide to and drag it around lettin the pup chase it i pretty much have fun with them but teach them the basics sit stay drop stuff like that i also like to take them on walks in the woods let them run around and explore alittle then when there about 5 or 6 months i show them a coon and take them on a few hunts with the older dogs after the 6 month period games have stopped and every time i take them out i go huntin i try to stay out till i can show them good game i take it easy on the breakin at this age but still let them know if they did something wrong im just a little lighter on them at first. if they dont stop with the trash i gettin alittle harder every time till my point is made by a year they should be treein there own coon, when winter comes around i change over and start cat huntin and walk them in to a tree or two then after that i turn them loose with the other dogs to run by this time they better know what not to chase and whats ok lol thats the jist of it all anyways
