Treat him for ear mites quick. They can get deep into his ears sometimes reaching the brain and cause swelling that will kill them. The sideways running is because his equillibrium is messed up from the mites being in his head.

Oh ya I forgot to say that you can go to your local feed store and get the ear drops.

Does he have a head tilt at all? (holds head to one side)
When I first read this I thought of "Dog tracking" where there front and rear move n different planes and they look "sideways." Typically happens when they are tired, they run that way to conserve energy it seems.
I have also seen dogs that have real bad Hip Dysplasia do somthing similar.

It's pretty rare that a dog gets mites. Ear ticks are a possibility, mites not so much. Though its still something to look out for...
Hounds are prone to chronic ear infections due to the long ears and wide ear canals. Might want to smell his ears for odor and possibly use a cotton swab to see if there is any liquid/puss. Then treat accordingly. Most ear infections need to be treated with an antiseptic cleaner and oral antibiotics, though I've seen aggressive home treatment work if the persons dedicated to doing it as directed..
BUT... that's just my opinion. Could be as Redwood suggested.. could be something physically related to the dogs skeletal system or performance habits.
