8 YO Mule for Sale 16.2 Hands--SOLD

Postby gbear1 » Wed Mar 07, 2012 2:37 pm

Business has been real bad lately and I have to let Toby go.
He is the kind of mule that I was hoping to be able to keep for the rest of my life, but I’d like for him to have a good home.
I bought Toby in January 2011 from a guy in Oklahoma.
I know that most of his life he spent in a pasture with cows, horses and mules. And he was ridden occasionally. He was ridden in a roping or other western horse saddle and the first thing I noticed is that the fit wasn’t right and because of this (discomfort) he has a high preference to be mounted from the right side. He can be mounted from either, just prefers the right. He doesn’t care which side you dismount him on. I bought a Dakota Mule saddle and the fit is much better, I think the more miles he gets with a proper saddle he will enjoy the trail more. Of course if you just want to pack with him then none of this matters.
He does not like other animals to be in close proximity to his hind end. So if he was in a pack line he might be best bringing up the rear until he was use to the situation. He does enjoy the company of other equines though.
I’ve never had any issue with him and people, he likes people-especially my wife, he is very protective of her. I can walk all around him and he is OK with it. He has no problems with me fitting a britchen on him, or for that matter touching his thighs and hocks at all.
You can pick up and clean is front feet just fine. At this time he doesn’t like his hind legs messed with too much but my farrier and my self have worked with him a lot to desentitize him and he will stand still now and not get agitated with touching his legs with whip/stick or rope. He lets me trim his tail just fine and brush him out. His belly in the flank area is a little ticklish/sensitive but he lets me brush it, I just don’t overdo it to the point of making him dislike it.
I was told that he had been on one hunting trip to Colorado, I don’t know when. I’ve only taken him Oryx hunting here in NM.
I wanted to turn him into a well rounded mule that I could ride, pack, or ground drive if I needed to move something. So I spent a good bit of time last summer not riding him but doing ground work instead using Tim Doud’s training techniques. He is smart and learns quick. I would like to say his round pen work is complete but it’s not. I mixed his training up with walking through tire mazes, crossing tarps or other unfamiliar objects, getting in and out of the trailer, etc.
In the saddle or bareback he has a glass smooth ride and I’m not exaggerating this. When you put him in gear- he goes. His leisurely pace covers ground fast.
I wish I had taken pics of him last summer, but I didn’t, he slicks up real good when he sheds that winter coat. When he slicks up and you get that winter coat combed out he doesn’t shed a whole lot after that.
He is a young animal well mannered and not perfect yet, but has a lot of years ahead of him.
