If I have some younger dogs that are going really good but that's all I have do you think an older finished dog would be my best option?

Always good to have an older BROKE dog in the bunch no matter what kind of game your hunting.

I am in a similar situation with three inexperinced dogs (2 1/2 years old) pen raised because of my health issues (Bad Hip). My old dog passed during the off time leaving me with no trainer. In passed seasons of my life I would have let the dogs go to some other hunter for their benefit, but knowing the hip was gonna be replace I held on to these three because I like all their attributes.
If I were to put an old dog with them, I would have to know it wouldn't bring negatives that presently don't exist. For example: Hunting style, being mouthy, slow, ability to locate and hold a tree.
As a rule, I like to pull a young dog away from a trainer as soon as they can put game up by themselves. They tend to progress quicker and I then know what they can do and what I have.
Good hunting to you

It can be good to have a old dog to start a pup with. The best cats that I have ever own have been hunted very little with a older dog. As soon as a young dog catches his or her game it is best to hunt them on their own. A old dog can slow them down a lot. If your 2 to 4 year old dogs are not leaving your older dogs then they are hurting them, holding them back on tracks. Dewey

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah my young dogs are really good they will both catch their own coons and they tree hard and won't leave, they have been mainly hunted in the orchards so they have a problem picking up a track and moving it. So I have a buddy up north that has a twelve year old good dog but he only has one season maybe the whole year left. So I think he would help with teaching them to pick up a track and move it. As stated above about pulling the young ones away when they start catching their own game I agree I just think one season with an older one would deffenetly benefit them. So there is some more info. More opinions are welcome and would help me greatly
