Split Bobcat Race ends with a Stolen Tom

We had a lot of hunters in the woods this season with the cat prices up. One split race ended with one tom in a rock pile hole and the other was shot out by an ethically challenged houndsman. What a guy! Two solid hounds of mine chased a nice tom up a drainage and it treed below a cutback road. After following the first half of the split race that ended at the rock pile I got the truck stuck in the snow and had to walk father in to the second tree than otherwise necessary. It took the hounds about an hour and a half to tree that tom and they were at the tree for another two hours before the other hunter heard them from up higher. The snow tracks told the story. He had a toyota and I had a dodge so he got to my tree before me. The heavier dodge got stuck in snow where the lighter toyota didn't. So being the cat slayer that he is he shot my cat, left my hounds at my stuck truck and hauled out before I could walk my tired butt back the the truck. I can't imagine how proud the guy must have been.

Really? This kind of BS really happens? It makes me sick to hear that people could even consider doing something like that. How do you live yourself?

Had a guy years ago who knew I had a bear treed up the ridge and while I waited for my hunting partner to get there snuck in a shot the sow with a 25lb +/- cub with it, I confronted the guy when he was on his way back to his truck he told me what he did I turned him into F&G thinking I was doing the right thing and even after the F&G found that he only took 1/2 the bear out of the woods they would not prosecute because the DA said it didn't have jury appeal.

These are the pigs that will wreck it for all of us!

That's when justice with our own hands would be nice. Seems like when you need it the law is never on your side but they'll try and take whatever they can from us.

The exact same thing happened here however Both sow and cub were taken and the truck tags recorded by another hunter this led to game and fish locating them days later. It was a taxidermist and his partner the excuse was they felt bad for the dogs treeing so long and shot the bear then noticed the cub and shot it so it wouldn't suffer. Now having a couple days to think on this you'd think their story would have been better. I was hunting the same area and can tell you it sure takes the fun out of it for everyone.

I don't say much on here but a split race has a dog or two going one way and others going a different way, how did you know it was a nice tom, why did it take you two hours to get to your dogs, how did you know he was in a toyota and why would someone shot another persons cat and take their dogs to his truck. You know alot of us hunters have radios and we talk to each other to see how were doing or in case someone needs help maybe you would like to tell these fine folks that your dogs had garmins on no name plate just slide on tag with a number a generic voice mail and your truck has a canopy with carriers in it.The reason you knew he had a toyota was he had your dogs on his truck and gave them to you. What a guy REALLY just saying!!

Jim,
I know it was a big tom by the tracks. What are you saying? Yes, that's my truck. I don't get it. The garmins call me to the tree. I don't need anyone to shoot my cat. I talked to the shooter. He told a story different from the tracks in the snow. Tracks in the snow don't lie. I offered to walk out the tracks and talk about it. I had a split race that day with some of my dogs going one way and some going the other. Thats why it took me longer to get to the tree. Also, I was stuck in the snow. What is it that you think you know? Where you at the tree? 503-510-2910 Sean ( call me.)

Sounds like there's a little more to the story. I guess things happen but why would he bring your dogs back?

Don't really want to ruffle any feathers but that sure sounds like a confession to me.

I don't understand how anyone can shoot a cat they didn't start and take it home. My dogs have "reward + phone number" posted on their collars. Maybe he wants me to give him a reward for his actions. Can anyone help me think of the proper reward?

I have had my dogs get in with other hunters and had others get in with mine on many occasions. Most guys don't do it on purpose. About ten years ago I had a cat get shot out of a tree and it was completely obvious the guys dumped in on my dogs. Those guys have a reputation for not only stealing cats but stealing dogs while they were at it. I am not talking about them picking up lost dogs, we are talking pulling collars and throwing them in the road ditch and trying to haul butt out of the woods.

I will say that most hunters are not looking to steal cats. I would bet from my experiences, there is some confusion here as to how it all went down. Are you sure your dogs didn't get in with his?

007, are you accusing someone on here? I know the hunter that was involved and also know the last thing he would do is walk to someone's tree and shoot a cat out from under you. There's a lot more to the story than you are willing to share and that's fine. I would think after 2 months you would have put it together better than that. I could care less about the whole situation, just maybe put all the facts out there before accusing someone of stealing. As far as you asking Or. Perk if he was at the tree I can tell you that your way off track.

First, I just asked if he was at the tree, meaning that if he was then he knows what happened. And I wanted to talk about it. If he wasn't, then he doesn't know what happened. I walked out all the tracks. And I listened to stories change as I revealed what I knew. So, I understand that "Shooter" tells his side. And I'm not questioning his past reputation. Just this one act that I was part of. No offense except if the truth is offensive. I am accussing someone of something I guess although I didn't mention any names here. I was just telling my experience. I own that. If I understand correctly, you are telling me that you didn't share this experience, but that he's not a bad guy. I've heard that from others too, so I'm processing that too. If it came down that he said something like "Hey man I thought those dogs were lost and I shot the cat because I didn't think anyone was going to ever come to that tree," then I'd understand better. If he somehow didn't do anything wrong, then he sure messed up by not telling the whole truth in the beginning because I know the story and tracks didn't match. Even if this was a shared tree or race, it still wasn't handled ethically. The thing is that he was offered to come back, walk the tracks out and talk about what happened. He declined. And, he left us with two trucks stuck in the snow. Not sure if he realized that. He was in too much of a hurry to haul out. I sure didn't just wake up and deside to write this post because I was bored. Maybe I'm pissed off, and maybe people can understand why. And if someone told you that "I know where you live," you'd be pissed too. Friend or foe, come on over. Hell man let the party begin.
