Is it the pressure it can feel of being plagued by a hound, or is it the music that does it, or does he just do it because its instinct, or does it do it because its tree or be killed? I know every cat is different but surely people have seen cats go up trees. When I saw one climb this winter, it was literally feet from the dogs.

I feel as if it is instinct! But I think every cat is different, some seem like they will never tree they will use rims, culverts or holes to get away and then some will tree as soon as they hear a dog right behind them. But i feel most cats are taught through history and family to tree to get away from predators. The country you are running in may determine some of that also.
