I hunt in the snow, last winter I used my chains probably a dozen times. Most of the time I don't use them. I try to create a track to use when the snow is powder... and keep it open for as long as possible. I know guys who will chain all 4s to make it somewhere but if its that bad id rather use my sled.

I chain up almost every day I am out in the winter months. Chains help me get out of tough spots more than they are ever used to get me in them. I have been on quite a few icy roads that chains have saved my truck. I figured chains are cheaper than replacing my door or fender. A good set is well worth the investment if you ever spend any time out in the hills.

I always carry a set of chains that have been fitted in my truck. We hunt very rough country and many times in the winter we will be driving in when the ground is still frozen and have little problem but later in the day when the ground thaws out it can really be tough getting out so it is handy to have a set of chains to throw on to make things easier. I usually carry chains for all four tires and a becasue i pull a single axle horse trailer with me most of the time I keep and extra chain fitted for the trailer to keep it from sliding sideways so much on icey roads.
Before you go get your chains fitted to your tires so you don't have to find out the hard way they are too short or that you have too much slack in them and end up cutting a brake cable or tearing something up. Make sure you have plenty of bungy cords and chain tighteners for each chain you don't want them loose and flopping around.
Our theory is if we have to chain up all the way to get into a place we probably shouldn't go in the first place. We should probably just dump the horses and ride in or you should drop your quad or snow machine and go that way, but at times you don't know and once you are committed you better have some iron with you to get you back out.
In the nasty spring weather we chain up so much that I can get out chain up four wheels and be back on my way in just a few minutes cuz i have everything fitted right and ready to slap on there.
good luck!

I carry chains but like the others, they are used to get home. Not to get to a spot. Except rare occasions. To answer your question, yes they make a huge difference.

some of you guys must not get bad ice conditions....chains are the only way to go with luge run type roads and often on all four.....it is cheap insurance.
early winter and early spring are always icy here.
I also have in the glove comparment a few easy links so as to get set of chains on when you cannot roll forward or back cause your stuck.......it is also better that the chain links are long so you can chain up without spinning the wheels if needed..use a easy link to tie off the over long chains
the older I get the more often I just chain up early just in case.
takes very little time to slap two pairs on.....not much more then locking the hubs.

i am with horshur, when your stuck you will be glad to to have the little extra length of chain so you can chain up with out trying to jack the truck up. i just hook the inside on the last link and as tight as i can on the out side . This will usually get you moving then you can tighten up your chains.I like the chains with the ice spikes or v-bars. Dont forget your shovel also

There is only one set of chains to have and those are trygg tire chains. A buddy of mine told me about these chains at first I was a little apprehensive about them and the price. But if you chain up more than once a year in a tuff spot you will never regret the purchase of these chains. Forget the frozen up buckles and the damn bungy tightners. Im pretty sure that if you google white mountian tire chains they will pop-up they are made in Idaho and a few tire shops carry them.

Carry four all the time. They are the heaviest you can buy. No fun to break a chain and tear a brake line. I have run 8 hours many a time on bad ice and drifted snow. Also carry about twenty five ten inch black rubber bungee straps for tensioners.

To add another angle to the chains discussion.
Tires are expensive and I find myself running the tread down as far as I can safely go (and sometimes maybe a little farther). Having chains with me gives me the comfort I need that if my wore out tires can't get me back to good ground I still have Plan B in the tool box.
Even if I could swing getting fresh tires all the time and just hand-me-down those half wore tires, I would still carry the chains.

Trygged up TRD's !!! The sky is the limit! Why? Cuz walking sucks!

Neither one of these trucks are stuck. Chains, I wouldn't leave home without 'em. I chain up just about every day.
