The only way that I can think of to fix or find out for sure what happened is go to the map page, press menu and go to Setup Map. Now go to Map Information and see what maps are enabled or disabled. Make sure that all applicable maps and the Birdseye are ENABLED.

Go to the map, Then the menu, Make sure your Declutter is turned off. I'm guessing that is your problem.
Let us know what fixed it.

So, once you subscribe, and download imagery for "area x" that is yours to keep, even if you do not subscribe the following year?

Catdogs you are correct. You can keep it, but if you want to "renew" the images a year later you'll need to re-subscribe.
