with the fresh snow we are getting u should go look for tracks . this is for 2 reasons . 1 is so u and your dog get on some cats and 2 is so u know where the cats live. even if u dont catch the cat u know u can go back to that spot and find a cat with or without snow.

If you can't get someone to help you. Do as JC said, and you can also try and trap yourself a cat and turn it loose for the dog. And just keep walking those tracks out with the dog.
Take care, Willie

All I did besides drags to start my dogs out was exactly as JC has suggested. I'd find a snow track that was fairly hot, and start walking dogs out. The best times to find tracks in my opinion if there is no snow to begin with... is 3 hours at least after a storm. i prefer 5 to 6 hours myself. I'm not saying you can't find them otherwise but this is what I've seen. If you already have snow... right before a storm is great as well. You will walk a lot of miles your first year doing this but after awhile the dogs will get the idea. Look for ideal areas for cats to work... This will be rock formations, creek bottoms, brushy roads with lots of rabbit sign. Another tip is avoid any "possible" bobcat tracks and just stick to those tracks that are for sure bobcat tracks. To discern a bobcat track from a coyote track look for these signs. "Round" cup like tracks, no feet dragging, fairly straight track line, walking on logs, usually short distance on a roads, if you can't make a X thru the track its a cat, if you can make a X then its a dog track, no claws in the track, small toes with a bigger pad.
This is just some stuff I've noticed I'm not saying its fool proof but hopefully it helps some

Well we had some snow last night. so i took a short day at work and went to the woods. I walk up a steep hillside that I knew had a lot of rock out crops and It didnt take long before I was on a hot track. she trailed it for about 1.5 or 2 miles before she lost it but I couldnt be happier. I cant wait for more snow. We didnt get much and it was pretty patchy on the hillside and was still difficult to track but she kept me on the trail

You'll have to expect that for awhile, once she gets her first the rest will come easier!
