Does any one have a good solution to hollow trees because there getting the better of us this year(in my area). I m almost to the chain saw or truck and log chain point.

The "smoking out" idea has been passed around as of late i just dont want to start trees on fire cause its been so dry here until these past 2 weeks it just might a viable option. Whats the success rate with that? lol

Well personally have never had to do it but seen it done on a video and very reliable good timer has done it with bears multiple times. You don't want a big fire you just want the smoldering affect doesn't have to be an open flame just get it smoky. If your good you might be able to squall the coon out with a squaller.

I've had the same problem last nite 5 hollows. "Leagally" you are not allowed to molest any hole or hollow tree. But when enough is enough stick the pistol in the hole and fire away and get a long peice of barbed wire to get the coon out. Last nite was the first time this year that i had a hollow tree. But with the corn being off early the dogs are goin a lot deeper to find coon. one tree last nite the dog didnt strike until 800 yards. When i got standing corn to hunt its always less than 100.

And by the way i wouldn't recommend smoking them out. bad experience and an ass whoopin from gramps.

Not saying this is what's happening, just putting it out there. If I have a dog that is constantly treeing on hollow trees or den trees I like to hunt them in the snow to make sure they are not taking the easy way out and running backwards and getting treed on a den tree. Also I have piles of coon within walking distance from the house I won't hunt cause all the woods is is hollow trees. I just use it to trap coon out of. Good luck

Yeah im going to climb the trees and start blasting rounds into the hole. We had one in a rock pile and after we shoot it it got stuck. About to give when the pup wiggled in there and dragged it out. Maybe we should start sticking dogs into the holes and let them drag it out. Im going cut down the trees on my property or cut the holes out bigger so I can c the bastards.

I would think having hollow trees where they can den up is a good thing and result in more coon in the area. So if you cut them all down you may end up with less coon calling that area home.

If smoke works then you could try using a beekeeping smoker so you don't start the tree on fire...

dang if it is a constant thing like you said, maybe that great hound is running the back track....
Might need to re think that dog
cut trees down and see just how long you keep coon in the area..... they need 3 things to live--
1) food
2) water
3) a place of refuge for a den

If you cut the trees down here you will not have a place to hunt long and some good honest hunters might use a limb on your backside.

driftwood blue Im just mad im not actually going to start cutting trees down my dad would kill me. A guy i run with watch the dog chase one right up and in a hollow tree. Are dogs are still learning but there doing good for puppies. Not to say that every hollow tree has a coon in it but next time i run across one im going to do some investigating.

where i coonhunt we usually end up with more hemlocks/pines than den trees, those hemlocks are a pain, back when we were hide hunting when hides were worth something we'd climb the pine and shoot em out with a pistol. den trees we couldn't do much, mostly hunted state land but, we did get lucky a couple times and they would run into a dead tree laying on ground with a hole in it and we would take a stick hook barbed wire to it and shove it in the hole twist it around and pull the coon, just happened to get lucky a few times and cross an old fallen down barbed wire fence on the way to the hounds. other than that the smokin em out with the thing they use for bees sounds like a darn good idea.

Had the same problem last night, but it is something that we have learned to live with. You can't have coon without dens. I would imagine if there are plenty of hollowed out den trees in the area, you should always have a healthy coon population. One thing you might try to avoid these trees is changing the time you go hunting. Maybe go later, or earlier whatever the case may be. Give them more time to get out and away from their dens. Just a thought.
