Alot of difference between a lion dog and a bobcat dog way less scent with bobcats. Most dogs make an ok lion dog few dogs make ok bobcat dogs and very few make top bobcat dogs. I would recomend walking with your dog and helping it out as much as you can and try to get it in on a few jumps this may help. Andy

Well twist is pretty close on this one . However having lived and hunted in both of these places quit a little I'd say most likely you have a issue . If this is a lion dog as bred then you'll have to settle with catching a occasional bobcat and let it go at that. I know I'll be booed and whatever else but here it is a eight year old lion hound is probably bred and trained to be meticulous on track and very likely has been shocked off a few bobcats. I bought a few of of the faster looking built hounds from established lines here that just prefer to work a track slower then is needed for bobcat not slow just Slower. The other issue is scent and location there's more bobcats on our desert floor and washes then higher where the lions travel the most so a dog won't normally get a great education on both and to cold trail a bobcat in az on a regular basis isn't something I've seen happen on a regular basis they have to hit a track right and keep moving and be willing to swing out and keep looking at a loss but be thorough about it . If your dogs coming back tha might be caused by anything at that age. But a possibility is there isn't a pack to lead her on. If a dog is hunted with a large pack all the time and was trained with one its possible she's concerned she's trashing ie when the pack goes left and the pup goes right the electric is coming . Try hunting with another cat dog and see what happens it should answer most of your question the other thing is I'm sure the dog has the nose if it was Really doing the job here to work there its just a question of shifting gears at the right time and running with confidence another thing is if the dog isn't used to the weather it plays ha OK with them and their ability to read scent correctly I think dogs can gauge scents age and use it as a measure and scents age differently in different weather conditions so keep that in mind for awhile

I have a few questions to . Was the dog sold as a lion AND bobcat dog or A lion dog that had treed a couple bobcats? Are you hunting her differently then she's used to? When you say ten minutes or so is the dog really running track or is this just a bump and sniff around type thing? A dog that is really into a track doesn't come back on ten so I'm wondering if this dog isn't better broke then was expected I hunted with a dog for years that would bump every coyote track he ever crossed to my knowledge he never actively ran one but I sure didn't hunt pups with him either. He'd strike the wiggle and circle out then right back behind the horse I buzzed him for it a few times but it made no difference he wouldn't silently pass a coyote track. Then what type of hound is this? A little more info would help are you running her on the plains farm ground river bottom or cedar breaks? Your from south east co right? Then are these for sure cat tracks and will the dog run anything else?

First off. Thank you guys for the reply. Twist I bought her as a lion x bobcat dog. I did find out who the man is that raised her. I cant remember his name right now. I did call him. He told me she would be my lead dog on lion and bear but he hadnt cought manny bobs with her. I am hunting the flats mostly. we havnt had rain in a good while. the tracks arent verry good, you can see a track but you cant really tell what it is. I turned her on a track that i seen the cat make. I gave it about a half hour. then roaded her over it. she pecked around on it then she was gone. ran it about a mile then came back to me. I started walking it with her but she wouldnt get verry excited about it again. Yes I am in the very se corner of Colorado.

JC I hunted south of Lamar for a long time and am familiar with most of powers bent baca and Kiowa counties and have plentiful of family in co . Like I said I don't believe its a scent issue. The dog should be able to push a track well there if it has any ability. Go down to one of the creeks canals or the Arkansas river and put her on either a coon or cat track and see what happens . I assume you've had the dog long enough to get her comfortable with you? You may have to hope for snow and really encourage her on track are you running her with a E collar? Take it off if you are. Do you know anyone else with hounds there?

Pegleg I am not running a E collar on her. I have a couple of friends here that run hounds. They dont get out to run dogs as often as i do right now. but in a month they will be out. I am thinking you might be right about the security thing. she opened yesterday a few times. the first time I went to her as soon as she opened. She did what she always does. took it a little ways then turned around and come back.

I called around. everyone that has hunted this hound has hunted her horse back. I have been hunting her afoot. could this be the reason she is not going on? I am going to try it horse back and see.

I doubt it. If she gets a good decent she should take it no matter how she found it.

Do any of you guys think that maybe this dog is treeing the cat and not locating? Seems like it could be a possibility to me.

I agree with Marshall, its a good chance the track is running out so she loses interest and comes back. I've seen my own dogs do this several times, and goto the last spot and there is a bobcat sitting there. It actually happened last weekend to me on a super hot track, dogs did a quick pop up and never located until I found the tree. If I was the guy, I would hunt on snow(if that's an option) with the dog and run behind it and see what the problem is.

I doubt he's treeing the cat . First of the area he's hunting is Flat and treeless as in wheat fields or the great plains second those areas with trees are typically creeks or small canyons a term I use very loosely like maybe twenty feet deep I really doubt the horse things a issue the only problems I've seen like this is if a hound used to foot or horse back hunting is truck hunted and thinks they're being left . JC I all try and call if I get a chance during reasonable hours . But get her on a coon track and see what happens most any dog will take a coon and if she won't you might have a issue lots of pups are started on coon and then switched but never broke off them as they're rare in most lion areas here.
