Close enoughf too what ? Hell one is not much of a preditor the other is a preditor ! Seems too me that preditors have a big game smell all their own but they say if a dog can run and tree up a coon solo he will make a lion tree up too ! Does that make a lion and a coon smell the same or is the 2 different game animals run the same mostly ?! Hell I couldnt tell ya cause I cant smell either track myself and so it would be a guess on my part !? Maybe coon has musk scent like a lion an bear he excreats along with his scent so it is close / who knows ?!

So you told me nothing in this post other than what I was thinking when I heard a few people who have a hound or two say this. ... I am not trying to sound like a jackass either just elaborating on the fact that you are telling what I was thinking and helping lay some foundation for my question.

close enuff - for what- would be my question too

-ive started a lot of pups on coon-- switched to bear - some of them spent all their lives trying to get completely broke off coon-- some were easy- it gives them a pretty big headstart if they are running /treeing / packing with other dogs-- before i take them bear hunting -

have had a tough time to break a few off coon that werent started on coon-- used to joke that the best way to make coondogs is shock or thrash them every time they tree one- -

comes naturally to alot of them

i think its best to start pups on coon - but i dont make coondogs out of them -- once theyve run a few bear- i treat coon like any other trash

a dog can easily smell the difference from one coon from another - or one bear from another-

they can smell better than we can see - lol
if they arent broke it wasnt an accident , they just didnt care - lol

i smoke and dont have a great sense of smell but i can easily smell the difference between a live bear or coon--

like cecil-- i cant smell their tracks -lol
