Officials: Mountain lion posed threat to public safety
COLFAX, Calif. (KCRA) —A mountain lion was killed by a Department of Fish and Wildlife officer on Sunday after the cat circled a man walking on a Colfax trail for over an hour.
On Saturday evening, a man took a walk on Stevens Trail in Colfax and was soon met by a younger adult mountain lion.
For over an hour and a half, the mountain lion circled the man.
Noise from a CHP helicopter overhead possibly caused the mountain lion to finally run off, the man said.
Due to concerns of public safety because of the many hikers and walkers in the area, an officer with the Department of Fish and Wildlife went out to Stevens Trail to locate the cat.
The officer said he was looking for the mountain lion and suddenly turned around to come face-to-face with the large cat, which he assumed was following him. The officer shot and killed the mountain lion, who was crouched down in attack mode, the officer said.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife said the officer who shot the cat acted inside protocol for the type of behavior the mountain lion was exhibiting.
Officials removed the mountain lion from the scene.
