How many generation down before a dog should not carry a name with it such as Nance, Mathis, Tant, Cameron, Smokey River ......... ? I hear dogs for sale here with names of people that have been gone for a while. Whats up with that? Dewey

Who really cares? This site has gone from a hound hunting site to a hound hunting philosophy class. And there are some pretty dumb philosophies on here. One is that you are going to somehow stop someone from using a name. If it's out of some dogs dna, use the name. Now can we go back to talking about people who have been dead for years and my buddies dog who actually speaks kindly to bobcats and respectfully asks them to climb trees?

I'd have to say the first generation. Because that man did not make the choice to put those two dogs in the breeding pen. Now to say a dog goes back to a dog or a line is something I would like to know if looking at a pup or dog. Once owned a dog that came from Boone Shockly. When I bred her I talked with Boone on witch stud to breed her to now I would call that litter Boone breed be he wanted say in who got pups out of that litter other then me & him.

Dewey, are you refering to phrases like "Nance breeding at it's FINEST".

I am referring to some one having a Nance,Mathias etc.. dog for sale or for stud. It has a long time since some of these people mentioned has bred a dog. I like to know what a dog as has in it and who made the breeding not the big name. I have heard of people that have a dog from me or hunted with a dog from me that I never bred or owned. Just hunted for a week to see what it could for for a friend. Can you believe people would promote a dog under false pretense. Dewey

Dewey recall first time I met you. You told me about having blood from Sonny Turner & several other breeders. I did not think you were trying to sell me a dog based on that name. Just figured you were being honest on where your breeding came from. True some of the old timer breeders are no longer around, however if some have line bred on their stock. Why not give the old timers their due? Just my thoughts, all breeders had to get their stock from some where. Al

I agree with you al. I always give the breeder whats do. I like to know what back ground a dog has. What I am referring to is when a guy says he has a litter of Nance, Mathais ect pups for sale. When you look at the back ground its great great grandfather was a ..... Does that make it what it is marketed at? That's what it has in it. So many back yard dogs are bred that people try to sale under a name. Not on merit. Dewey

Someone said everyone started some where and thats true , this might not have anything to do with this topic , but my neighbor swears up and down that his dogs formed the star mountain stock of plotts someone just got one and put a name on it . Does anyone know the guys name who owns star mountain plotts?

Cobolt, mybreeding stated over 30 yrs ago and comunicated with Lester by phone and mail in the early 80s as he new very well where our greatgrandson of LittleTopper came from that was where we started and latter on got where he couldn't comunicate very well so he would have his wife write as he talked and that's the way we corrisponded until he passed. So be it Nance or my strain now, Lester is the one I credit and I believe I owe him that. Andy

DWalton, I believe if a person (this is only an example) hunted off, lets say Del Camerons "Ben dog," and this person saw a traight in Ben dog that he sought after. So the said person obtains as many pups / dogs out of ben and his littermates as possible. And only kept the dogs that had that same trait that ben had. And from a serious line bredding program / culling, if the said person could succsefully through a litter of pups with the original triat of ben dog over and over then that person would have the right to use the name (once again only my opinion) Because this person has work for that original trait he wanted.
Now on the other hand if a person pays $xx of dollars for a "cameron" pup and and then crosses it with the neigbours dog of whatever and sell the pups with the name just sell them quick at a good dollar then in my books is not truthfull.
