Hey i got a honda rancher 420 4x4. I need help on what snow tires i should get. the snow i ride in is a lot of old snow that. i sink i get high centered in. and it gets really old not being able to go anywhere on my quad. once the snow is old. i know i could get tracks. but looking for a cheeper soulution first. i know i need a good wide tire but dont know what brand. so hwat do you guys use thanks for then help

well I use a snowmobile here in maine when we have snow.. get some of those tracks for the wheeler. the work awesome but about half as fast.. chains work good too.

Get the tracks its worth the money, Your getting close any ways new tires are going to cost $1000

I've got five quads and two sets of tracks. Tracks will take you anywhere and vertually never get stuck, but they are a pain to put on and take off, you loose power, speed and maneuverability. You won't ever need them in most conditions unless the snow gets over about 18 inches. I never even put them on one quad this year and only used the other quad a couple of days with the tracks.
There are a couple of very good snow tires on the market. I like ITP mudlites or 589's. you can pick up a set of these for less then 600 dollars. eBay is probably the best place to get the best price.

I have run Bear Claws, they are the same idea as the ITP Mudlites only they have a flatter tred if you will. The ITPs I find run more on the center of the tread where as the Bear Claws distribute evenly across the tred... Both are a good option though.

Course you can always just lift the whole thing so you have more clearance too

Just about any wide tire will work. With that being said you can only go through so much snow and the crusty snow will only carry so much weight. You can go to taller tires and a lift kit, but when you get stuck or break through its just going to be that much harder to get back out. And say you are crossing a shallow drainage with about 4' of snow for cover and you break through, your screwed! LOL
I have two side-by- sides and don't drive in any snow that's higher than the axles and if you have to use all wheel drive you shouldn't be there driving in the first place, unless you don't mind taking a long walk home every now and then. Most days its just better to take the truck where you can and haul a ATV in the back for just incase... Good luck..

Edit to add: For you guys that have to or want to take your tracks off every now and then.
Get a 3/4 sheet of plywood and cut it down to 2x3 squares and mount dolly wheels underneath. Jack the track side of machine up and place dolly under track and take bolts loose and use the dolly to help pull the track out and away from hub. Makes life a little more enjoyable.

If we only hunted in places where snow was only axle deep we wouldn't do much hunting. I got tired of digging a snow mobile out so I bought the tracks and swear by them. There is not a 4-wheeler with tires that can go where I can. I don't know how much snow you have to deal with in Washington might not make sense but here it does

Save yourself time and $$ - go buy an old $500 fan cooled snowmobile. Tracks on an ATV are nice and they will go darn near anywhere but not as fast or easily as a snowmobile.
I have tracks on my Can-Am outlander and love them but for hunting I'd rather have an old junk snowmobile.

Get some tracks if you can but if you cant Maxxis Bighorns are really hard to beat, great in all terrain and last forever. I wouldnt buy a snowmobile, tracks will go where a snowmobile wont go and a 4 wheeler is alot more reliable than a snowmobile. In my experiences with snowmobiles they are like jet skis, they spend alot of time in the shop.
