I have been thinking about trading my full size truck in for a small tuck. Currently have a quad cab dodge 1500. Been looking at the newer Tacomas from 05 up in an double or extended cab. Does anyone use the 4 cylinder trucks with an auto to hunt with? Don't hunt a lot of rough country just some tight older roads. Also thinking about in the future traveling to do some hunting in other areas.

If I were going with a 4 cylinder, I would get a stick. I would also go pre '05.

Yep, 4 cylinders with a automatic tranny's are turds! Get a older one with a 5 speed.

04' Tacoma V6 automatic. Its been my favorite truck yet. Lots of room and has been pretty bullet proof.

I ran in to this same problem last year. My 3/4 ton extended cab was just way to heavy in mud and slush not to mention it cost 20 to 30 bucks in gas to go in the hills. I ended up buying a Kia sportage, its a stick, 34 miles to the gallon and I just folded up the back seat and throw the dogs in. I have plans of jacking it up a little and carpeting the hood. so far I love it the short little wheel base makes it preform like a four wheeler. I haven't got it stuck yet in fact the day I bought it I went out to a mud hole I got stuck in the day before with my truck and got threw it with no problems what so ever. Did I mention 34 miles a gallon! 34 miles a gallon!!

If you go with a Tacoma be sure and go pre '05. The newer models don't seem like the same trucks. I had an old '94 Ranger 4x4 auto with the 4.0 liter, put over 250,000 miles on it, most all off road. I really updated the other day and bought a '04 Ranger 4x4 with 4.0 liter and 5 speed. It had only 41,000 miles on it and is in great condition except for a couple of dents but dogs don't seem to mind. It is a Supercab but has only two door which is great as it is tight as a jug. The four doors are nice when getting in the back seat but rattle after bouncing over these rock piles.

I perfer the older Toyotas with a 5 speed and a V6. The 4 cylinders are underpowered and get less fuel mileage when loaded down. 4 doors are nice but you lose bed space and they do develope a rattle after time. Here is my 1992 extra cab V6 5 speed, it will go anywhere and gets pretty good mileage. It gets better mileage than my buddies 4 cylinder 5 speed.

built this one from the ground up.... it gets 16-19 mpg towing and 20-24 mpg hunting and driving around.

I ended up trading today for a 06 extended cab Tacoma with just over a 100K on it. Thanks for the advice. Still going to use my ranger for this season and start planning out a box for the Tacoma soon.

I got rid of my 2500 Cummins and stepped into a 07 ext tacoma. I really like the truck because its small and I can squeeze into tight quarters where I couldn't even imagine of driving through with the tank with wheels I previously owned. My Tacoma has the sport package andis the 4.0 v6 with a auto trans. I really wished I had looked for an older model Tacoma 4cyl 5 speed because the one I got now is terrible on gas in town, on the highway, and especially bad when riding around looking bar tracks. Just do some good research before you swap

Went with a good choice that's what I have. 06 Tacoma extended cab but I have just over 200 thousand on it. Basically all guiding and mountain miles. Has been a dang nice truck had to replace shocks a couple times and blown a few seals but overall its a good truck.
