hey does anyone on here have any exsperiance with seld dog breeds. i am considering getting a few to pull me around up on the hills. because it seems like it would be fun to run hounds this way. i just need to know what an average dog can pull. i am looking more at malamutes. any help would be great also i would even consider dong a cross with a sled dog on with hounds because a lot of the breeds where breed to hold polor bears at bay. just looking for opinons. and help thanks brady

When we lived in alaska ididnt have dogs myself but the guys i ran with did. Most ran McKenzie river husky and Siberian huskys. They all told me a minimum of 4 dogs to pull a grown man on a small sled. 6 is optimal to be able to carry gear.

Four big english pointer birddogs will pull a 4 wheeler faster on flat ground than you'll want to ride. LOL!! Speaking from experience.

I think most of the alaskan huskies that they use for racing carry quite a bit of hound bood back in the woodpile...

I have a friend that uses his hounds to pull a sled when he cuts a track he unsnaps them puts his snow shoes on and away he goes. he said it didnt take long before they figured it out. There are pictures and stories in a full cry a couple years ago. i think its in the full cry that has a plott face to face with a lion on the cover . that plott is one of his lead sled dogs. he has a light built sled he made. it works real good for him. Something you might think about.

When I was living in my home state of Maine, I had a team of Alaskan Huskies. They are awesome for flat ground and packed trails. Going uphill be prepared to help push the sled, deep snow- better have snowshoes to break a trail.
My dogs were used for winter beaver trapping and also ice fishing.
Takes a lot of work to keep a team of huskies in shape so be prepared to work. Not trying to discourage you as when I get back to snow country, I will be back mushing...
