Alright so I got down to a new portion of crick today and found some definite coon tracks, and the pup didnt even think twice about them, in fact while he was playing in the water i noticed em and followed them before the pup even knew i was gone.
How can i reinterest my pup, so far his only interest is in housecat and yote (when around, and not in a pack, lol) oh and sleep (completely different from my birddog).
im thinking caged coon might get him going again which would be nice, cause after much thinking, im not sure i want to hunt coyote cause its dog and "inedible", so coon might be better.

Those tracks could have been older than they looked and the pup just didn't smell anything or he is just more interested in playing right now. 8 months is young but sounds to me like you are doing everything right, getting them in the woods early is important. Even if he don't see game it will give him confidence. Remeber most dogs are not realy mature til 2 years old, not to say some are not early starters. And they should be showing you something as early as 6 months. Is he using his nose alot when you walk him?

Oh he's always got his nose to the ground and he follows his nose well all over the forest, and he loves to explore. Hopefully this summer ill be able to take him with me when I take the horse out to the mountains.

Then he is likly following scent trails, just not putting it together with the critter yet. One of these days it will all click and he will realise that there is a critter at the end of those trails. Showing him a live critter might help speed up the process but if he has the drive it will happen. And that day will be a good day indeed! I always rember the first time a young pup puts it together and turns it on. Its like a switch gets flicked in thier brains and they seem to almost be a differnt dog.

Yeah this same knucklehead was on another board talking about lion hunting in oregon too. Maybe he needs to watch what he says. I know one guy on this board who got a visit from fish and game over something he said on here.

This same kid is the one who on another thread said his dog was barking at a cockatiel, cockatoo whatever in the street and he hit him with the shock collar, the same kid who was walking down the sidewalk (with the shock collar on his dog) that hit the dog again for messin with a lady's dog. Not a whole lot of sense in the things that he is doing right on the street with the dog. Worst of all he's in one of the two most liberal anti hunting states, Oregon. I hope he reads this and thinks about things ahead of time while out messing with his dog. Even though he's not really a houndsmen, in the wrong someone's eye he's making all houndsmen look like idiots!
