just thought I'd give everybody something to keep in mind. This dog took advantage of a lion making a bad step, and got the cat by the throat. He got a dose of both teeth and claws before the lion squirted out from under him and up another tree. two days later his head swelled up. A trip to the vet and skin started opening up and falling off. A flesh eating bacteria has taken over his face, antibiotics are doing their job, but the side of his face may still fall off. I've had plenty of dogs scuffed up by cats just the same as this, keep the worst case scenario in mind all the time and take precautions.

Dang Larry, thats a bad looking deal. I keep antibiotics in my pickup at all times and shove a couple down any dog that gets even the slightest scratch or hole in them from a cat. Anyways keep us updated on your dog please.

I had a dog that got bit in the side by a bobcat and gave him antibiotics but not long enough the first time and the backteria got walled in between the tissue layers and so I gave him antibiotics for a month after that and it still came back so after going to the vet and finding there was no tooth or claw in there and that no antibiotic could cure it he had to have surgery they cut him up pretty good trying to get it all out. It costed me 3600 bucks. 6 months later After that it came back again the bacteria was spredding it was like a big sore eating its way from the inside out. So I had to re do the surgery again this time they went as far as the could go with out killing him yep another 3500 or so but this time they got it all and he was fine.that was one expensive bob I feel for you those antibiotics are gold and I give them to my dogs well after its healed

I always use amoxicillin but when I had this problem they had me on some high dollar stuff but none of it worked because the bacteria was walled off in between6rgzj-4132223922@sale. craigslist. org check it out tissue layers that the antibiotics wouldn't reach. That's what the vet had told me If I would have given him amoxicillin longer the first time none of this would have happened to me

Larry, did your vet say whether or not this bacteria would have taken over had you put your dog onantbiotics immediately after he was bitten/clawed?

Cephalexin 500mg every 12 hours. Something like this, straight to the vet.

this was not something that would send anyone straight to the vet. there were no serious wounds to speak of on the dog. nothing with flowing blood, and no visible puncture wounds. a couple little scratches around the muzzle. Had I not been standing there and seen the cat bite down on his neck head area i would have never known it happened. I assumed the collars took the brunt of the bite, which I think they do most times. Lions dont let go when you kick them in the head either haha! Only indication of any injury was a wince when I took his collars off later that day when i bumped the base of his ear. He caught another lion the next day. didnt come out of his house to load the following days hunt but still no indications other than acting sore, he was swollen like a volley ball when I returned from that nights hunt the following day then straight to the vet.

What I meant to say, at this point, something this serious needs a veterinarian asap, just like you did. What type of antibiotics did the veterinarian prescribe?

I use tetracycline when my dogs get ate up by bobcat . Leave them on it for a week,works great.Don't know if they would have worked for the lion bites.

Boy, that is horrible. I hope the best outcome for your dog. Unfortunately, I know all too well of your advice to assume the worst case scenario and take the precautions.

Had some bobcat bites before and amoxicillian alone wouldn't even touch the infection. Had to use Clavamox (mix of clavulonate and amoxicillin).
So each vet has their own theory and whatnot, but my vet said he prefers cephalexin AKA Keflex antibiotics for surgery types of wounds and amoxicillin for anaerobic infections like an abcess. amoxicillian is a penicillian based antibiotic, narrower spectrum antibiotic and cheaper. Cephalexin is a broader spectrum antibiotic.

cephalexin didnt get the job done, thats what the first vet prescribed without doing a culture on the bacteria. He is on a monster dose of Clindamyacin now. 10 pills a day
