This universal rule seems to apply in most areas of life; what are all of your thoughts regarding how valid this rule may be in the context of houndsmen buying pups or older trained dogs? Do you find it proves true, false, or really doesn't hold much water either way?

I've seen some dandy dogs sold for not much money and complete junk sold for a pile. Same with pups. Don't get sucked in to the thought that is costs more so it's got to be better. Dog Jockeys froth at the mouth and get all excited when guys think like this.
Bottom line, go see a dog hunt before you buy it. If you like what it does, give it a whirl. Pups are a crap shoot, just treat the money as if you're lighting it on fire. If you can do that, roll the dice. You might get a dandy or a dud. You won't know till it's fired down some tracks.
Just remember, Good dogs don't need their tires pumped. They just get it done and it's obvious. There is a helluva lot more good dogs "for sale" than there is actual good dogs.

A man will not sell you his good dog. If that man is a hunter, he just as well shoot himself in the foot. He might give it to you, but the good ones. ARE NOT FOR SALE. quote (E.F.C)

The cheaper the pup the better. I like the ones that are free or next to it. Have seen dogs bred to perfection and selling for top dollar that couldn't find a hotdog in a food dish. Guys that buy pups for over 200 bucks that are just going to hunt them are crazy.

I don't think it applies to hounds, I bought the best female I ever owned cheap out of a champion bloodline because she hadn't started real good at 9 months. Two years later he offered me 3 times what I paid him for her. The best male I ever had I bought from another hard hunter at a good price because some of his hunting buddy's were down talking the hounds bloodline however later he and some of those buddys came and bred bitchs to him. My whole pack was wiped out on the highway one night and it shocked me how many hunters and how far some of them drove to give me a good hound or puppy out of their pack since than I give away any extra pups in a litter or any hound I don't want and I've given away some pretty good ones that had a few more years left, gave away started young jip last year because she babbled when cast with other hounds she did it bad enough I didn't think she'd stop and a man wanted her , I hunted several times this year with the man I give her to, she has stopped the babbling and I sure wish I had her back. I told him he should give her back haha but he just smiled I'm glad he likes her.
