wanting to learn the basics so I don't got to take the dogs in every time they get a minor cut or some thing that can be done to fix um up at home. advice on books, an medical kits,? and were to get antibiotics an such things. THANKS.

We have Dog owners Home Vet Handbook. Covers pretty much everything. Most all supplies can be purchased at a farm/ranch supply store for the rest, buddy up to a vet.

If I would recommend only one it would be The Dog Owner's Home Veterinary handbook. I also keep the Merck Veterinary Manual and Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook for drug info and dosing.

Learn to treat cuts/lacerations/bites from another houndsman or a vet which will save TONS of money

Antibiotics from the vet's and even feed stores are overpriced, order a big bottle online or through catalogs, will last for a long time and be much cheaper and easier to access instead of having to run to the vet's every time

Always keep a good first aid kit handy--I do almost all my vet care at home--saves money and when you're hours away from the vet it can save your dog's life. I include a staple gun or sutures, betadine flush, sterile water, needles, Blue Kote or wound ointment, scissors, foreceps, bandages, gauze, Vetwrap, lidocaine, Silvadene, lactated ringer's for dehydration, eye flush, eye ointment, pliers (porcupine quills), antibiotics (Clavamox, amoxi, cephalexin, etc.), pain meds (Rimadyl)...

A few key things--never staple/suture a laceration all the way shut. Always leave a small opening for drainage. Bite wounds--just flush and leave open. Small cuts--the same. Even a large laceration will heal without being closed, bust stapling encourages healing faster. The most important thing for wounds--keep them clean!
