Tooting my own horn

Until you've had the opportunity to get behind a finely tuned pack of killing machines, one simply cannot understand what is possible. I've spent the past couple of years searching tirelessly to end up with a pack of dogs that had the ability and desire to hunt that matched my own and I believe that I have finally found it.
When my buddy, Curt, said he was coming over for a visit, I was pretty excited to show him the country and this fine pack of young dogs I've been working with. In fact, he even hauled a nice young dog over for me. We hit the woods nice and early the first day but it was a slow start. We finally got a good strike but they were unable to get it going. We found a pretty small track so we weren't too disappointed. The next bark was a dandy track but, again, it was just too old. Curt had to meet a contractor on his property so we headed home after listening to another guys race. They didn't catch the bear.
The next morning found us hopeful and confident because the dogs had made such a good showing the day before. The dogs were wired for sound after having no race the previous day so Curt would soon see the fire and determination that I have been spawning with these dogs. It didn't take long for the dogs to be chewing on black fur a couple hundred yards above the road. That short race only seemed to fuel the fire so we headed out in search of more game. After a few hours of silent rig dogs, we headed into a new area and the box blew up, once again. All of the dogs piled off and the fight was immediately on.
That is where things sort of went south. We then, spent the next two hours pulling quills out of dogs that were soaked in skunk pee from the mornings first race. Yep, I finally found a pack of dogs that have the ability and desire to hunt that matches my own.

lol see i just equate black fur with skunk first so i commiserated from the beginning. i used to have the skunk killingest dog i have ever even heard about. i'd tell stories on her abilities but no one would believe the numbers unless they had to ride home with her. unfortunately she was also one of the better bobcat dogs i've owned. all shocking her did was teach her to kill skunks quietly and stay down wind when she could. but you knew when she started stating out aways that she had killed one. if she had just been a skunk dog it would have saved both of us. i would have quit hunting cats and she could have lived out her days happily killing skunks. on the up side she wouldn't get within a hundred yards of a bear or porky. i guess she was straight on Her chosen game. i only hunt wonder dogs now. its easy when its 90 out.

Wait our dogs aren't supposed to do that? I don't know what part of Idaho you're from but around here, we call that a two tree day. HA!

Good story. I doubt that anybody on here has a dog that can compete in the skunk catching and killing ability as my best bobcat dog. I have whipped and shocked her many times but it doesn't do any good. I have kind of just learned to live with it, though she still gets whipped every time. I have even had her cold trail a skunk over a mile having a hard time moving the track before catching it.

This is the skunk dog support group right?

haha Ill see your skunk Hounds and Raise you a Diller dog! I had a yella cur pup who I swear could smell a diller hole and know how many armadillos had been thru that hole and no amount of whoopin, cussin, kickin or crying could stop him till he found the last one. LOL

I have a treeing walker deer/skunk hound I'll put up against anybody. She just loves ( or hates) skunks, I haven't figured out which. The older she gets the more skunks she catches. One h££l of a skunk dog!

I have one of the best bear and skunk combo dogs you've ever laid eyes on. She's nine now. Hasn't gotten a skunk in about a year. So the past 8 years of shocking and long talks must have worked alas, that or she's dying. She is the only dog to kill a skunk and still tree the bear 10 minutes ahead of the rest the dogs. That poor skunk crossed the wrong track. It was weird, cause listening to that race she, she is wide open and she shut up for a good long while. Then opened back up moving out, wasn't like her to loose a track after running it so hard. All our buddies dogs kinda went silent around that area too, and one opened again until they got to the tree with her.
