Man thats one of the best questions I have seen in a while. I like runnin most all males, females to me are an evil nesesity. But I have herd a lot of old timers, guys who know how to catch game and they like females, they say there better bay dogs and for the most part dont get rough enogh to get them selves killed. But that is why I like males( not the get them selves killed part) but the roughness they tend to get, now dont get me wrong guys I have had females that have put alot of my roughest males to shame, But I think you get consistensy out of both as far a rough goes.I have also herd and havent really paid ant attention to see, but some guys will swear that a female tends to have a better nose then a male. I have seen alot of guys #1 dog be a female but most of'em are males, does any body think that holds water, that a female has a better nose then a male?

I'm just starting my first stud dog this year. It seems that he has alot of pent up energy and is constantly bouncing of the walls, yet he runs 4 to 6 miles 6 days aweek. On bears my females are a little more agressive but rudy was really bred as a cougar hound and had his first taste of bear this spring. My vote undecided

I put this up because I had all males before and they did not jockey for alpha male until a female arrived. My males can hunt or at least train year round. And as for fixing them... I did not buy there genetics to cut the tree down.

I voted intact male but half my dogs are cut. I see no difference in how they act or hunt though. I've been running only males now for the past 10 years. Best decision I've ever made. No females in heat to mess with. The boys all get along, fighting is now non existant. The only reason to have females is if you like to breed your own dogs, which I decided it was much easier getting them from other houndsmen. I keep all my dogs in a large one acre dog run and they all sleep together in one large 8' long insulated dog box. Keeps them much warmer when its 20 below and during the day, they are usually horsing around all day playing instead of sitting bored all day in a dog kennel.

The best luck I have had with an dog is close your eyes and grab one or two. hunt the hell out of them for the first year or sometimes two, and see what you have. If the dog is worth breeding keep it that way, if not have it fixed. the only hang up with most male dogs is the time it takes to smell all the other dogs and bushes. I have seen females that will fight game and other dogs just as hard as the males. Once you have them fixed they are all the same. a good dog is a good dog It really doesn't matter to me. Just wish I had a few more!
