Hello all, I was wondering how many cat hunters out there are in PA. What type of hounds and blood are you running on these bobcats. Thanks for any responses

Try a google search on Pennsylvania houndsmen. I know there is at least one site for guys out in your part of the US. even the foxhunters in PA might have some information for you.

Do you know the name of that site? Not having much luck searching google.

Huntingpa.com is one you could try posting on. There is another hound site though for Northeast houndsmen. I will let you know if I can find it.

Try calling the Matt McDonnell number. I bet he knows the web site and a bunch of other info too! He probably knows of some cat hunters out there.

As far as the Smokey River Blues, I wish you could find someone catching bobcats with them in Pennsylvania. That is the only advice I am qualified to give you on them. And when I say catching bobcats, I mean forcing them to stop on the ground or in a tree, and not because they got hit with lead or made it to where they were born. There just are not a lot of dogs that can stop a PA bobcat. If you try some dogs that are not proven for this, you are testing out a theory. This kind of test will cost you years and thousands. Some one has already tested your theory. Find them.

If you are approaching this thing based on your love for a certain breed, you should get that breed and try to discover what that breed does very well. Then do that thing so that you can get the most enjoyment out of the breed you love so much.

If your love is bobcat hunting, don't cripple yourself by starting out with a love for a certain breed. Develop your breed preference around the requirements of your chosen game.

If at all possible hunt with the dogs you plan on getting pups from.It doesn't matter what breed you like or what game you hunt .As David said it will save you time and money .I don't know anything about Pennsylvania but i know a little about the Smokey River dogs .This is my perspective .In general they are great tree dogs that will tree on ANYTHING that climbs ! They usually have a good cold noses but some hot nosed ones pop up here and there .The greatest variation comes in their tracking style .On occasion you'll still see the stereotypical type of blue that is just happy to trail something and can't or won't get in any hurry to catch it.Then on the other end of the spectrum you'll see those that breathe fire and swing off track so much that you'd think they were part running dog.Then there are those that do it just right,these type will take a almost non-existent track and drift out on it ,opening here and there as they heat the track up until the cat is jumped.Then they have the speed to catch him or make him climb.They are not a great pack dog and maybe to independent for some guys but they'll hang a tree with dogs running trash all around them.They won't suit everyone but i like em!
